LA Galaxy Erase Two-Goal Deficit to Stun Colorado Rapids 3-2
Trailing 2-0 at halftime, the LA Galaxy scored three unanswered goals in the second half to secure a crucial 3-2 victory over the Colorado Rapids.

Three points in the Western Conference playoff race. That is the exact measure of what was slipping away from the LA Galaxy at halftime on Saturday night, and the basis on which they engineered a breathless 3-2 resurrection against the Colorado Rapids. Trailing by two goals after a disastrous opening 45 minutes, Los Angeles stormed back at Dignity Health Sports Park, flipping the script to pull dead even with Colorado at 36 points in the standings.[1][2]
The stakes were suffocating. With the postseason line looming and both clubs desperate for breathing room, Colorado arrived in California ready to play spoiler. They executed their blueprint flawlessly in the opening stages, absorbing possession and punishing the Galaxy in transition. The Rapids' defensive aggression through the midfield paid dividends almost immediately.[3]
It took just four minutes for the visitors to draw blood. After a defensive stop, Jackson Travis fed Josh Atencio in the midfield. Atencio carved open the Galaxy backline with a curled ground pass to Donavan Phillip, who quickly found himself in a one-on-one with goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski. Phillip buried a left-footed strike into the upper corner for his second goal in as many matches. As the Colorado Rapids' official media team noted of the blistering sequence, "Donavan wasted absolutely NO time" in punishing the Galaxy's sluggish opening.[1][3]
The Rapids doubled their advantage in the 39th minute, silencing the Carson crowd. Veteran defender Rob Holding launched a lofted ball over the top, finding Paxten Aaronson. Despite heavy pressure from a Galaxy defender draped over him, the Designated Player powered through and bounced a shot beyond Marcinkowski's reach. The strike marked Aaronson's sixth goal of the season and his fifth goal contribution in his last four appearances, leaving Los Angeles in a 2-0 hole at the break.[1][3]
But the Galaxy emerged from the tunnel with a radically different intensity, pressing higher and suffocating Colorado's attempts to build out of the back. The turning point arrived in the 53rd minute, sparked by a Pablo Ruiz free kick. Justin Haak flicked the delivery into the danger zone, and under heavy pressure from a lunging João Klauss, Colorado defender Reggie Cannon inadvertently deflected the ball into his own net, cutting the deficit in half.[1][2]
Suddenly, the momentum violently shifted. The Galaxy's continuous pressure forced a catastrophic error in the 66th minute. Rapids goalkeeper Nico Hansen mishandled a pass directly in front of his own goal. Klauss easily intercepted the loose ball and tapped it home from close range to level the match at 2-2.[1][2]
For Klauss, the equalizer was a personal triumph. Making his first start since suffering an injury on April 18, the Brazilian forward notched his seventh goal of the season and scored in back-to-back matches, proving his fitness exactly when Los Angeles needed him most. His return to the starting XI injected a physical edge that Colorado struggled to contain in the second half.[1][2]
The comeback was completed in the 74th minute via a set piece. Robert Taylor delivered a pinpoint out-swinging corner kick into the box. Haak, who had already catalyzed the first goal, battled through two Colorado defenders to snap a header past Hansen. The strike secured his first-ever goal for the LA Galaxy and sent the stadium into delirium, completing a three-goal unanswered run.[1][2]
Colorado surged desperately in stoppage time, earning three late corner kicks in an attempt to salvage a point. However, Haak and veteran Maya Yoshida anchored the Galaxy defense, making crucial clearances. Marcinkowski slapped away a final dangerous cross, and a last-gasp header from Phillip sailed over the crossbar, sealing the 3-2 victory for the hosts.[1]
The result fundamentally alters the Western Conference landscape. By erasing the two-goal deficit, the Galaxy not only secured their second consecutive victory but also neutralized Colorado's advantage. Both clubs now sit deadlocked at 36 points with the playoffs rapidly approaching, setting the stage for a frantic final stretch of the 2026 season.[1][2][3]
