Following a deadly shooting that killed two soldiers at a checkpoint, the Israeli military has launched a massive security operation in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron, displacing approximately 2,000 Palestinians. Forces have sealed all entrances to the city, demolished buildings, and ordered hundreds of families to evacuate their homes.[1][2]

The escalation began early Friday when two Palestinian gunmen opened fire on Israeli troops at the Farsh al-Hawa checkpoint west of Hebron. The attack left two soldiers dead and three others wounded during a 20-minute gunfight before the attackers were killed. The slain soldiers were identified as Staff Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roytman, 23, and Sgt. Yuval Shai Svilem, 20.[1][3]

Within hours, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a comprehensive siege on Hebron and neighboring Halhul. He pledged to implement the "successful and aggressive model" used in northern West Bank refugee camps, promising mass demolitions in the neighborhoods where the gunmen lived and warning of a broader regional crackdown.[1][3]

By Saturday evening, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the scale of the evacuations. "About 2,000 have been displaced," Katz said in an interview with the Kan public broadcaster. "They will not be allowed to return to their neighborhood until we've finished dealing with all the Hamas issues in Hebron."[1]

Mass Evacuations and Demolitions

The military operation has heavily targeted the Deir Bahha and al-Jalda neighborhoods, an area spanning approximately 86 acres and containing nearly 500 housing units. Residents were ordered out of their homes at gunpoint, with some given only two hours to pack essential belongings and official documents before troops moved in.[4][5]

Hundreds of Palestinian families were given only hours to pack their belongings and evacuate their homes in western Hebron.

Israeli troops have begun razing structures in the area, deploying bulldozers to destroy residential buildings and commercial shops. The military stated that it is demolishing "illegal structures that could pose a security risk" and dismantling terrorist infrastructure used by the attackers, while measuring the gunmen's specific homes for future destruction.[1][4]

Hebron Mayor Yousef Jaabari described the situation as a humanitarian crisis, noting that the evictions affected elderly residents, women, and children. "Hebron is now a disaster zone," Jaabari said on Saturday. "The occupation has closed all entrances to the city. No one can enter or leave."[5]

The municipality has declared a state of emergency and established a crisis management committee to assist the displaced families. With all roads blocked by earth mounds and concrete barriers, many residents without vehicles were left stranded, forcing dozens of families to spend Friday night outdoors in the cold.[2][5]

The Israeli military maintains that the operation is "focused and limited to the area from which the terrorists operated." According to the army, Palestinian residents in the affected zones can leave through three designated exit points, where they are subjected to questioning and security checks before being allowed to pass.[1][6]

Accusations of Collective Punishment

The sweeping nature of the operation has drawn intense criticism from Palestinian officials and human rights organizations, who characterize the mass displacement as illegal collective punishment. Rights groups argue that forcing thousands from their homes violates international law governing occupied territories and constitutes a disproportionate response to the checkpoint shooting.[3][6]

"What we saw today was an attempt to copy the illegal practices used in Gaza, in the heart of the West Bank," said Mohammed Dahleh, a human rights lawyer who filed an urgent petition to halt the demolitions. "They want to wipe out entire areas exactly as they did in Gaza."[3]

Israeli officials have openly embraced the punitive nature of the campaign. Far-right national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir traveled to Hebron on Friday, demanding further restrictions on Palestinian movement and the dismantling of the Palestinian Authority, while Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich published videos supporting the neighborhood's destruction.[3]

The Palestinian Prisoners' Society reported that Israeli forces detained approximately 70 Palestinians in large-scale raids across the West Bank following the Hebron attack. The organization noted that troops converted several seized homes into temporary military posts and field interrogation centers, holding dozens of young men for hours under harsh conditions.[2]

In the Ein Deir Baha district, evacuated buildings have been marked with black 'X' symbols by Israeli soldiers. While the official meaning of the markings remains unconfirmed, residents fear they designate structures slated for imminent demolition, leaving them permanently homeless and altering the demographic makeup of the city's western edge.[4][6]

Broader West Bank Tensions

The Hebron lockdown occurs against a backdrop of surging violence across the West Bank. The territory has experienced a sharp increase in Israeli military raids and settler violence since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023, severely restricting Palestinian daily life and crippling the local economy.[2][6]

The current military campaign coincides with the annual Palestinian olive harvest, a period traditionally marked by heightened friction. The United Nations recently reported that settler attacks targeting Palestinian harvesters have already surpassed the total recorded during the entire 2025 season, resulting in one death and over 120 injuries.[2]

In addition to the residential closures, the Palestinian Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs reported that Israeli forces shut down the Ibrahimi Mosque following Friday's shooting. Custodians were removed from the UNESCO-recognized World Heritage site, and the traditional Muslim call to prayer has been entirely banned by the military.[5]

As the operation enters its third day, the fate of the displaced families remains uncertain. With the military signaling that the raids will continue for several days, local authorities are struggling to provide adequate shelter and resources under the strict siege conditions, warning that another 2,500 residents could face imminent eviction.[1][2]
