Every scientifically validated personality assessment used in modern psychology, clinical diagnostics, and corporate hiring operates on a mathematical reduction of the English dictionary. Rather than inventing categories of human behavior from scratch, researchers extracted every adjective describing human variation from a 1925 edition of Webster's New International Dictionary and subjected them to statistical compression.[4][5]
This approach rests on the lexical hypothesis, a concept first articulated by Sir Francis Galton in 1884. Galton reasoned that if a human trait is highly important to interpersonal interaction, society will inevitably invent a word for it. As the Philosophy Dictionary of Arguments notes, the hypothesis assumes that "the most important individual differences in human transactions will come to be encoded as single terms in some or all of the world's languages."[4][7]
The raw data collection began in 1936, when psychologists Gordon Allport and Henry Odbert manually scanned the 400,000-word Webster's dictionary. They extracted exactly 17,953 words that distinguished the behavior of one human being from another.[2][4]
Allport and Odbert then filtered this massive list, removing physical traits, temporary cognitive states, and social evaluations. They were left with 4,504 adjectives that described relatively stable personality traits—words like "sociable," "aggressive," "fearful," and "dependable."[4][6]
Until the advent of advanced computing, this 4,500-word list was practically useless for clinical measurement. The human brain cannot evaluate a patient across thousands of distinct axes. Psychology required a way to find the underlying structure beneath the vocabulary, a method to determine which of these thousands of words were simply synonyms for the same biological mechanism.[5][8]
The solution arrived through factor analysis, a statistical method that groups variables based on how strongly they correlate with one another. If people who describe themselves as "talkative" also consistently describe themselves as "outgoing" and "energetic," factor analysis identifies that these three words are measuring the exact same underlying dimension.[3][6]

In 1961, United States Air Force researchers Ernest Tupes and Raymond Christal applied factor analysis to peer ratings of military personnel using a subset of the dictionary words. Their computers revealed that the thousands of overlapping traits mathematically collapsed into exactly five independent dimensions.[4][5]
Lewis Goldberg later formalized this structure in 1990, coining the term "Big Five." The five orthogonal factors—meaning they operate independently of one another—are Openness to experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism, commonly remembered by the acronym OCEAN.[1][3]
The mathematical elegance of the Five-Factor Model is its redundancy elimination. A person scoring in the 95th percentile for Extraversion is highly likely to embody dozens of the original 1936 dictionary terms, from "gregarious" to "assertive." The five factors are not specific behaviors, but broad gravitational centers around which specific behaviors orbit.[3][8]
However, the lexical hypothesis carries inherent limitations. Because the model was built entirely on the English language, researchers spent the 1990s and 2000s testing whether the five factors emerge when analyzing the dictionaries of other languages.[1][5]
Cross-cultural replication has been largely successful in Germanic and Romance languages, but anomalies appear elsewhere. When psychologists applied the lexical approach to the Hungarian language, they found that the "Openness" factor did not clearly emerge from the vocabulary. Similarly, studies of the Tsimane people in the Bolivian Amazon found that their language and behavior clustered into only two broad factors: prosociality and industriousness.[3][6]
Furthermore, some psychometricians argue the mathematics stopped one factor short. The HEXACO model, developed in the early 2000s by Kibeom Lee and Michael Ashton, re-analyzed lexical data across multiple languages and found a consistent sixth dimension: Honesty-Humility. This factor captures the variance between sincerity and deceitfulness, which the original five-factor rotation absorbed imperfectly into Agreeableness.[3][4]
The debate over a fifth versus sixth factor highlights the boundary of the lexical approach. Statistical rotation requires researchers to decide when a cluster of correlations is distinct enough to warrant its own category. The math provides the clusters, but human judgment defines the threshold.[6][8]
The legacy of the 1936 dictionary scan is the standardization of behavioral science. Before the lexical hypothesis, psychologists proposed anywhere from three to 16,000 personality traits, making it impossible to compare research. By trusting the vocabulary that humans naturally evolved to describe one another, the field established a quantifiable baseline that remains the gold standard for measuring who we are.[2][5]
