The days of actors staring blankly at tennis balls on green sticks are over. The alien landscapes, sprawling cityscapes, and historical battlefields you watch on screen are now physically glowing around the cast in real time, fundamentally rewriting how Hollywood spends its money. By replacing the traditional green screen with massive, high-definition LED walls, the film and television industry has effectively moved the most expensive parts of post-production into pre-production.[3]
This workflow, known as In-Camera Visual Effects (ICVFX) or virtual production, relies on a structure called an LED volume. Instead of flying a 150-person crew to a desert in Jordan, a production builds a physical patch of sand inside a soundstage and surrounds it with a 270-degree screen displaying a photorealistic desert. The environment is rendered live using video game technology, most notably Epic Games' Unreal Engine, allowing the digital world to exist in three dimensions.[2]

Beyond the geometry, the LED volume solves one of the most stubborn problems of the green screen era: lighting. A traditional green screen bounces green light onto the actors, requiring tedious digital removal and artificial color correction. In a virtual production, the LED wall itself acts as the primary light source. If a scene is set during a Martian sunset, the screen emits genuine amber and crimson light, which physically reflects off the actor's skin, armor, and props in real time.[3]

According to a 2025 analysis by SP Studios, utilizing in-camera visual effects reduces post-production compositing by 40 to 60 percent. Scenes that once required weeks of painstaking rotoscoping and rendering now come out of the camera with final-quality results, allowing studios to maintain aggressive release schedules without compromising visual fidelity.
The savings on location logistics are equally stark. SP Studios reports that virtual production cuts location costs by 50 percent compared to traditional travel. The FX network series Snowfall, for example, saved as much as $49,000 per episode by utilizing virtual environments instead of securing permits, booking flights, and moving equipment. For a standard 22-episode television season, that translates to over $1.07 million in recovered logistics budget.
This financial efficiency is driving a massive infrastructure boom. A 2026 market report by Grand View Research valued the global virtual production market at $2.8 billion in 2025, projecting it to surge to $12.3 billion by 2033 at a compound annual growth rate of 20.4 percent. The rapid expansion of LED volume stages is the core driver of this growth, as the upfront capital cost of building a stage is increasingly offset by the guaranteed savings in travel and post-production labor.[1]
However, the technology is not a universal replacement for physical filmmaking. The system requires productions to lock in their visual decisions months before shooting begins, eliminating the "we'll fix it in post" safety net. If a director decides they want a different mountain range after the scene is shot, changing it requires expensive digital replacement, entirely defeating the purpose of the volume.[3]
There are also physical limitations to the light the screens can produce. "LED volumes have a limited brightness, and the light spreads out, so you can't create harsh shadows," notes Lukas Lepicovsky, Director of Virtual Production at Eyeline Studios, in a 2025 interview with VFX Voice. Because the panels use standard RGB diodes, they struggle to replicate the hard, full-spectrum intensity of direct natural sunlight, meaning traditional lighting instruments are still required to shape the scene.
Despite these constraints, the integration of real-time rendering into live-action filmmaking represents the most significant workflow shift since the transition from film to digital. Location scouts are now taking 360-degree photogrammetry scans of real places to build digital assets, rather than organizing parking for production trucks.[3]

It provides studios with predictable budgets and insulated schedules, immune to weather delays and lost daylight.
