Global Motorsport Power Rankings: Antonelli Surges as Palou Clinches IndyCar Title

Kimi Antonelli, running on fresh medium compound tires, swept past his Mercedes teammate George Russell through the Ascari chicane to take the lead of the Italian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver started 19th after taking a back-of-the-grid engine penalty, yet carved through the field with 26 on-track overtakes. "He kept his head down, took no risks on both starts and just one-by-one began picking off the cars ahead of him." Mercedes-AMG F1 itself holds the number two spot in the rankings. The Brackley squad executed a flawless split strategy under the caution, leaving Russell out on older hard tires to secure track position while giving Antonelli the rubber advantage. The 1-2 finish marks Mercedes' 250th Grand Prix victory as a power unit manufacturer and extends their Constructors' Championship lead to 122 points.[2]

Max Verstappen occupies the third tier of the power index. While the four-time world champion sits sixth in the overall standings with 127 points, he continues to extract maximum yield from a Red Bull RB22 that lacks ultimate one-lap pace. The momentum contrast is sharpest at Ferrari. The Scuderia plummeted down the form guide after a disastrous home weekend. Charles Leclerc suffered a massive 60G impact when his SF-26 veered into the Parabolica barriers on Lap 2, bringing out an early red flag. Driving the No. 10 Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing, Palou finished the 95-lap Mission Foods Grand Prix of Monterey in eighth place, which was more than enough to hoist the Astor Cup. He ends the 2026 campaign with 631 points. "It's just incredible to win the championship yet again," Palou said. "We had so much speed today, we just didn't really make the best decisions in the race."[8]

Rounding out the top five is Team Penske's Scott McLaughlin, who delivered the drive of the day in California. McLaughlin dominated the season finale, holding off Andretti Global's Kyle Kirkwood by 1.8 seconds at the checkered flag. The victory snapped a grueling 36-race winless streak for the New Zealander, dating back to the Milwaukee Mile in August 2024.[7]

Kirkwood's runner-up finish at Laguna Seca secured him second place in the final IndyCar standings, 86 points behind Palou.
