Ernie Johnson is stepping away from the anchor desk that defined modern sports television. The 70-year-old broadcaster announced Wednesday that the 2026-27 season will be his last as the host of "Inside the NBA," concluding a 37-year run that transformed a standard postgame recap into a cultural institution.[1][2]

In a video posted to social media, Johnson emphasized that the choice was entirely his own and that he is not retiring from the industry completely. He plans to continue his work covering the NCAA men's basketball tournament for CBS and TNT, while also launching a new production company called 32 Bowties.[1][3]

"This is by no means the end," Johnson said in his announcement to fans. "It's just a turning of the page, and I'll forever cherish every chapter we have written with Inside the NBA."

The decision comes after a period of significant health challenges for the veteran host. Johnson revealed that he underwent bypass surgery 14 months ago and has been navigating heart issues over the past two years, which underscored his desire to spend more time with his wife and grandchildren.[4]

This is not the first time Johnson has publicly battled health problems during his tenure. He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2003 and missed presenting duties during the 2018 Major League Baseball playoffs due to blood clots in his legs, yet he consistently returned to the studio.[4]

Johnson joined Turner Sports in 1989 and took over hosting duties for the NBA studio show the following year. Over the next three decades, he became the essential, steadying presence alongside a rotating cast of analysts that eventually solidified into the legendary quartet of Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O'Neal.[4]

The unscripted chemistry between the four men turned "Inside the NBA" into appointment viewing, earning the program 19 Sports Emmy Awards. The broadcast recently transitioned from its longtime home on the Turner networks to air on ESPN and ABC, though the core dynamic remained unchanged.[4]

By the numbers: Ernie Johnson's legendary broadcasting career.

"Ernie Johnson is one of sports media's most respected and beloved figures," ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro said in a statement following the announcement. "For more than three decades, he has been the heart of Inside the NBA, helping create one of the most iconic and entertaining studio shows in sports."

Johnson's departure raises immediate questions about the future of the program's current lineup and its unique tone. Barkley has previously stated that he intends to retire from television at the end of this season, frequently noting on air that he and Johnson operate as a package deal.[3]

For now, the crew will finish out their final campaign together, with Johnson's last broadcast scheduled to take place during the NBA Finals in June. The remaining months will serve as an extended farewell tour for a broadcaster who fundamentally changed how basketball is covered on television.[1][3]
