The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued an urgent directive instructing consumers to immediately unplug and dispose of a specific model of combination gas and carbon monoxide detector. The devices, sold widely across major e-commerce platforms, have a documented history of remaining silent while deadly gases fill a room.[1][2]
The warning centers on the "4 in 1 Plug In Natural Gas and Carbon Monoxide Detectors," specifically Model KH158. Manufactured in China by Shenzhen Kanghua Shengshi Industrial Co., Ltd., the units were distributed under at least 18 different brand names, including ARIKON, ELECOIN, KH Alert, and XLA Alert.[1][2]
Between June 2024 and July 2026, consumers purchased approximately 376,974 of these detectors through Amazon, eBay, AliExpress, Micro Center, and Snapklik. Priced between $13 and $140, they were marketed as an affordable, all-in-one safety solution for residential use.[1][2]
However, the CPSC has received 91 separate reports of the KH158 detectors failing to sound an alarm in the presence of active gas or carbon monoxide leaks. Despite the documented failures, the manufacturer has explicitly refused to issue a voluntary recall, forcing federal regulators to issue a unilateral safety warning.[1]
Because there is no formal recall mechanism in place to retrieve the units or automatically refund buyers, the burden of safety falls entirely on the homeowner. Regulators are urging anyone with a KH158 model to throw it in the trash immediately rather than attempting to return, sell, or donate it.[1][4]

When inhaled, carbon monoxide passes from the lungs into the bloodstream, where it binds to hemoglobin—the molecule responsible for carrying oxygen to tissue. Crucially, carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin with an affinity roughly 200 times greater than oxygen.[3]
As the gas hijacks the hemoglobin, the blood loses its ability to transport oxygen, causing individual cells to suffocate. The brain and the heart are the most vulnerable organs to this rapid oxygen depletion.[3]
At low levels, CO poisoning mimics the flu, causing headaches, dizziness, weakness, and nausea. Because it lacks a fever, victims often assume they are simply tired or coming down with a bug, leading them to go to sleep—a decision that can be fatal.[3]
At high concentrations, carbon monoxide can cause confusion, loss of consciousness, permanent neurological damage, and death within minutes. This rapid onset is why early, reliable detection is a non-negotiable requirement for residential safety.[3]
The baseline standard for carbon monoxide alarms in the United States is UL 2034, a rigorous certification developed by Underwriters Laboratories. Alarms that meet this standard are explicitly calibrated to sound before CO reaches life-threatening levels, giving occupants time to evacuate.
Under UL 2034, a certified detector must sound an alarm if CO levels exceed 70 parts per million (ppm) for one hour, 150 ppm for 10 minutes, or 400 ppm for four minutes. This tiered response prevents nuisance alarms from brief, harmless exposures—like lighting a gas stove—while ensuring immediate alerts during a genuine crisis.
The CPSC advises that consumers replacing their faulty KH158 units should exclusively purchase detectors that prominently display the UL 2034 certification mark. The agency also recommends installing a working detector on every level of the home and outside all separate sleeping areas.[1]
The KH158 warning is part of a broader federal crackdown on defective safety equipment sold through third-party online marketplaces. In a separate but concurrent alert, the CPSC also warned consumers to stop using the TJTFJS 2-in-1 Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detectors (model TJ00907), which similarly fail to alert users to hazardous smoke and fire.[2][4]
For renters and homeowners, the directive is clear: check the back of your plug-in detectors today. If the model number reads KH158, or if the device lacks a recognized safety certification like UL 2034, it should be replaced immediately to ensure the home is actually protected.[4]
