Seventy-two hours before an Open Cup final, the Columbus Crew walked into a sold-out TQL Stadium and swept their fiercest rivals for the 2026 season. The 2-0 victory over FC Cincinnati on Sunday night secured three critical points in the Eastern Conference playoff race, pulling the Crew within a single point of the wild-card line.[1][2][4]

The result hinged entirely on a stark contrast in final-third efficiency. FC Cincinnati dominated the run of play, holding 66 percent of the possession and outshooting the visitors by a massive 24 to 4 margin, but they failed to convert a single chance.[1][4][6]

"In the end, we lost an important game, and that's what matters," FC Cincinnati head coach Pat Noonan said following the match. "That's what we have to accept and move on."[3]

The decisive moment arrived in the 22nd minute, exploiting a known vulnerability in the Cincinnati defense. Brais Méndez delivered a deep, looping corner kick to the back post, where an unmarked Gonzalo Tapia easily headed the ball home to open the scoring.[1][2][3]

The sequence unfolded while Cincinnati was temporarily playing with ten men. Defender Tyrell Malacia had received a heavy check outside the Columbus box and was receiving treatment on the sideline when the corner was taken, leaving the back line disorganized.[3]

Cincinnati pressed relentlessly for an equalizer, with Teenage Hadebe and David Douděra both creating dangerous opportunities before the halftime whistle. The best chance fell to Tom Barlow in the 28th minute, but Columbus goalkeeper Patrick Schulte denied the breakaway to preserve the clean sheet.[2][3]

The Crew doubled their advantage shortly after the break through a ruthless, clinical counterattack. Taha Habroune finished a rapid transition sequence assisted by Tapia in the 54th minute, effectively killing the match and silencing the raucous crowd of 25,513.[1][4][6]

Despite the bitter loss, the evening carried historical significance for the home side's back line. Defender Nick Hagglund entered as an 18th-minute substitute for Julián Malatini, marking his 179th appearance for FC Cincinnati and tying Yuya Kubo for the most games played in club history.[1][3]

The defeat leaves Cincinnati at 9-11-9 with 36 points, clinging precariously to eighth place in the Eastern Conference with only five matches remaining. The Orange and Blue have now been held scoreless for the first time since their September 9 trip to the Philadelphia Union.[1][3]

Columbus, meanwhile, improved to 10-15-5 and 35 points, riding the momentum of their third consecutive regular-season derby win. The Crew now hold 11 victories in the 23 all-time matchups between the Ohio clubs, compared to Cincinnati's six wins and six draws.[1][3][5]

The playoff picture tightens immediately for both squads as the regular season nears its conclusion. Cincinnati returns to TQL Stadium on Wednesday to host D.C. United, needing a victory to stabilize their postseason positioning, while Columbus carries their newfound momentum forward.[1][2]
