Published in the journal Science Advances by an international team led by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), the study is the first to quantify heat exposure directly attributable to climate change across specific age groups. Researchers combined population data with advanced climate models and attribution science to isolate the human-driven increase in humid heat. They found that 43 percent of all children aged zero to nine are experiencing 30 or more extra days of heat stress annually.[1]

This burden is highly disproportionate across generations. The 560 million children affected represent nearly three times the 190 million people aged 60 to 69 who face the same increase in heat exposure. The disparity is driven both by the sheer size of the global youth population and by the fact that the most rapid population growth is occurring in regions where climate-driven heat increases are most severe.[1]

The study focuses specifically on humid heat, measured using the Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT). A day is classified as a heat-stress day when the WBGT in the shade exceeds 28°C (82°F). At this threshold, high humidity prevents sweat from evaporating efficiently, making it drastically harder for the human body to cool itself and increasing the risk of severe thermal strain.[1]

Children are physiologically uniquely vulnerable to these conditions. Their bodies heat up faster than those of adults due to a higher surface-area-to-mass ratio, and their sweat glands are less efficient at regulating core temperatures. Beyond the immediate medical risks of severe dehydration, heatstroke, and organ failure, prolonged exposure to extreme heat disrupts sleep, limits outdoor physical activity, and impairs cognitive development and learning.[1][2]

The geographic distribution of this heat burden is heavily skewed toward tropical regions and lower-income nations. South Asia, Southeast Asia, and West Africa currently have the highest numbers of children exposed to dangerous heat stress. In these regions, younger populations intersect with inadequate housing, limited access to air conditioning, and overstretched healthcare systems, leaving families with few tools to protect their youngest members from soaring temperatures.[1]

The trajectory points toward further escalation if current emission trends continue. Under a scenario where global warming reaches 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels—a threshold that current policies are highly likely to breach—the number of children exposed to an extra month of extreme heat is projected to rise to 620 million.[1]

At 2°C of warming, that figure climbs to 650 million, representing nearly 60 percent of all children in that age bracket globally. Furthermore, under the 2°C scenario, an estimated 420 million children would face at least five total months of heat stress every year, fundamentally altering the conditions of childhood in affected regions.[1]

Lead researchers emphasize that while the data is grim, it underscores the immediate human stakes of climate policy. Slashing fossil fuel emissions and massively scaling up climate finance for adaptation measures—such as heat action plans and resilient public health infrastructure—are critical to shielding the youngest generation from an increasingly hostile climate.[2]
