Aston Villa Extends Perfect Champions League Start With 3-1 Victory Over Viking

To survive the Champions League's brutal new league phase, a club has to turn its home ground into an absolute fortress. Aston Villa has done exactly that, making Villa Park an impenetrable venue for European visitors and establishing a baseline of dominance that makes knockout qualification look like a formality.

Unai Emery's side systematically dismantled Norwegian champions Viking FK 3-1 on Wednesday night, extending their flawless start in Europe to three consecutive victories. The commanding win pushes Villa into second place in the massive 36-team league phase, trailing the summit only on goal difference after scoring 12 times in three matches.[1][2]

"We played a very serious match, disciplined, organised, and then tried to impose ourselves," Emery told TNT Sports following the final whistle. "We were dominating, feeling comfortable through our discipline tactically, and then exploiting through our individual qualities."

The tactical control was evident from the opening exchanges, even with a makeshift backline that saw midfielder João Gomes deployed at right-back for 70 minutes. Villa suffocated Viking's transitions, allowing Ross Barkley to open the scoring in the 23rd minute by rising highest to meet an Ibrahim Mbaye corner.[1][2]

Emiliano Buendía doubled the advantage just before halftime, calmly converting a penalty after Brazilian winger Alysson was brought down in the box. Alysson was a constant menace down the right flank all evening, repeatedly stretching the Norwegian defense and ultimately creating the decisive third goal.[1]

"He's improving his consistency," Emery said of Alysson's dynamic performance on the wing. "He has very good qualities to exploit individually, but also collectively; he must understand his consistency and the combination with the players. And today, I think, one step forward for him."

Just past the hour mark, Alysson's surging run and subsequent cross forced Viking defender Henrik Heggheim to turn the ball into his own net. That sequence effectively killed the contest, allowing Emery to rotate his squad and introduce fresh legs like Leon Goretzka, Matty Cash, and Tammy Abraham.[1][4]

Viking did manage a late consolation when Peter Christiansen lashed home a volley with six minutes remaining, punishing a brief lapse in concentration. Viking coach Morten Jensen acknowledged his side's slow start, noting, "In the first half, we were too hesitant, and we let Villa play."[1]

The late goal denied Villa the outright top spot in the standings, but the broader statistical milestones remain staggering. This was Villa's 12th consecutive home victory in major European competition, matching the longest streak achieved by any English club this century.[1][2]

Furthermore, Villa became the second-fastest team in history to reach 20 European Cup or Champions League victories, achieving the feat in just 30 matches. Only Spanish giants Real Madrid, who reached the mark in 29 games, have hit that benchmark faster in the competition's history.[1][2]

With nine points secured and a plus-seven goal differential, Villa is already eyeing the automatic qualification spots for the knockout rounds. The challenge now shifts to maintaining this ruthless efficiency when the caliber of opposition inevitably steps up in the coming weeks.
