San Diego Wave Lock Down Hometown Phenom Melanie Barcenas Through 2028

The youth movement in the National Women's Soccer League is accelerating, and San Diego just locked down the hometown face of it. Eighteen-year-old forward Melanie Barcenas signed a two-year contract extension with San Diego Wave FC, keeping the Clairemont native anchored in Southern California through the 2028 season.[1][2]

The transaction rewards a breakout 2026 campaign that has seen Barcenas transition from a teenage prodigy into a reliable attacking centerpiece. Across 23 appearances and 12 starts this season, she has logged 1,088 minutes and led the Wave with 24 shots on target.[1][3]

Her production has placed her alongside some of the sport's biggest names. With six goals this year—including two game-winners—Barcenas tied the NWSL single-season scoring record for a teenager. She shares that mark with a formidable list of attackers: Sam Kerr, Mallory Swanson, Trinity Rodman, Jaedyn Shaw, and Emeri Adames.[1]

She reached that six-goal milestone during a 2-1 victory over the North Carolina Courage on September 12.[1]

"I'm really proud to represent my city and this club that has believed in me from the beginning," Barcenas said in a statement released by the team. "This season has been an important one for me, helping me grow and gain confidence as a player, and I'm excited to keep pushing myself."[1][2]

The extension is a significant milestone for a player who has grown up entirely within the Wave's system. In March 2023, at just 15 years and 138 days old, Barcenas became the youngest player to sign an NWSL contract. Later that year, she set another league record as the youngest player to record an assist during a 2-1 win against Gotham FC.[1][3]

San Diego Wave General Manager and Sporting Director Camille Ashton emphasized the 18-year-old's tactical evolution. "Melanie has shown tremendous growth both on and off the field this year, establishing herself as one of the league's most dynamic young attacking players," Ashton said. "Her confidence, creativity, and ability to impact games have been evident."[1]

The move arrives during a busy late-season transaction window across the NWSL, as clubs move to lock down core talent ahead of the playoffs. In the same week, the Utah Royals extended Canadian international Cloé Lacasse through 2028, while the Washington Spirit signed Colombian midfielder Leicy Santos to a new deal through 2027.[4]

For San Diego, the focus remains on an immediate postseason push. The Wave currently sit just one point out of second place in the league table.[2]

Barcenas's trajectory also includes significant international experience. She has represented the United States across six different youth levels, recently helping the U-17 squad secure a bronze medal at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, where she scored three goals in the group stage alone.[1][3]
