On October 10, the Portuguese Football Federation officially imposed a provisional suspension on Cristiano Ronaldo and opened disciplinary proceedings against the 41-year-old forward. The urgent investigation centers on Ronaldo's unauthorized departure from the national team camp in Copenhagen late last month.[1][3]
The federation's Non-Professional Section initiated the proceedings following a formal deliberation on October 9. In a released statement, the governing body confirmed that the case has been referred to its disciplinary investigation committee, with all findings remaining confidential until a final verdict is reached.[1][5]
"Without prejudice to the automatic preventive suspension to which he was subject until the date of establishment, the non-automatic preventive suspension of the player was determined and the urgent nature was attributed to the process," the federation stated.[5]
The disciplinary action triggers potential long-term consequences for the national team captain. Under the federation's disciplinary regulations, any player who abandons a national team activity without justification faces a suspension ranging from one to six months, alongside a financial penalty of up to 1,000 euros.[2][6]
If the maximum six-month ban is applied, Ronaldo would be ineligible for international selection until March 2027, forcing him to miss the conclusion of the UEFA Nations League group stage. A shorter suspension could see him return in time for Portugal's November fixtures against Denmark and Wales.[1][6]
The suspension represents the formal fallout from a fractured relationship between Ronaldo and new Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus. The dispute peaked during the current international window when Ronaldo was left on the bench during a Nations League match against Norway.[1][2]
Ronaldo contends that Jesus had explicitly promised him 30 minutes of playing time in that fixture. When the manager did not substitute him into the game, Ronaldo left the squad's base in Copenhagen on September 30, notifying the federation of his departure before the subsequent match against Denmark.[1][6]
"The manager had broken his word to me," Ronaldo wrote in a public statement earlier in the week. "I warmed up from half-time onwards, watched the minutes tick by and wasn't called on."[1]
Despite his frustrations with the coaching staff, Ronaldo has publicly accepted that his departure violated team protocols. He acknowledged that his actions must carry consequences and stated that the punishment should not include any mitigating circumstances given his role as team captain.[2]
"I owe my national team teammates an apology for leaving the training camp," Ronaldo said. "Despite the absolute breach of trust in the coach's word, as anyone who witnessed our conversations can testify, I should not have done it. The responsibility is exclusively mine."[2]
Portugal has maintained its form on the pitch despite the captain's absence. With Ronaldo either an unused substitute or away from the squad, the national team secured three consecutive victories, driven by three goals from his replacement, Gonçalo Ramos.[1]
