Tottenham Hotspur finally secured their first Premier League victory of the season on Monday, defeating Coventry City 3-1 in North London. Goals from James Maddison, Omar Marmoush, and Ben Davies provided the breakthrough, lifting Roberto De Zerbi’s squad out of the relegation zone.[1][2]
The stakes were massive for a club that spent heavily over the summer only to open the campaign with three draws and three losses. A failure to win against newly-promoted Coventry would have pulled Spurs within one game of matching their worst-ever Premier League start from the 2008 season.[1][4]
Instead, Tottenham dominated the tempo from the opening whistle, holding 72 percent of the possession and suffocating the visitors. The breakthrough arrived in the 14th minute courtesy of Maddison, who was making his first competitive start for the club since May 2025.[2][4]
Meeting a cutback pass from Mohammed Kudus on the edge of the penalty area, Maddison bent a spectacular first-time strike into the top-left corner. The goal ended a grueling 610-day Premier League scoring drought for the 29-year-old playmaker.[3][5]
The finish also cemented Maddison's status as the league's premier long-range threat. It marked his 21st Premier League goal from outside the box since his 2018 debut, pushing him past specialists Kevin De Bruyne and James Ward-Prowse for the most in the division.[5]
Despite chasing the game, Frank Lampard’s Coventry side refused to fold and found a lifeline shortly after the break. In the 50th minute, Jack Rudoni capitalized on a penalty-box scramble, hammering a close-range shot past Antonin Kinsky to level the score at 1-1.[1][4]
The tension inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium could have spiraled, but the hosts responded just nine minutes later. Andy Robertson slipped a precise pass to Marmoush, who spun past defender Milan van Ewijk and curled a shot beyond goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.[3][5]
The 59th-minute strike was a major milestone for Marmoush, marking his first goal for Tottenham since his high-profile summer transfer from Manchester City. It restored the lead and forced Coventry to abandon their defensive shape in search of a second equalizer.[5]
The home crowd received another massive emotional lift late in the second half when Dejan Kulusevski stepped onto the pitch. The Swedish winger made his first Premier League appearance in 526 days, closing the book on a devastating injury rehabilitation process.[4]
Spurs did suffer a minor scare when both Robertson and Tosin Adarabioyo were forced off with knocks late in the half. However, De Zerbi downplayed the severity of the knocks during his post-match press conference, calling them "small problems" that shouldn't linger.[1]
