Le Classique Preview: Stumbling PSG and Marseille Face High-Stakes Derby at the Vélodrome
Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique de Marseille clash in an early-season Le Classique with both French giants desperate to reverse their sluggish starts to the 2026-27 Ligue 1 campaign.

The stakes for Sunday, September 20, 2026, are stark. When the 8:45 p.m. CEST kickoff arrives at the Stade Vélodrome, Le Classique will ignite as it always does, but this weekend's edition finds both Olympique de Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain desperately trying to stop their early-season bleeding.[1]
For the hosts, the situation is already bordering on a full-blown crisis. Bruno Génésio's squad sits 15th in the Ligue 1 table, having secured a meager three points from their opening four domestic fixtures.[2][4]
The momentum from their 4-0 opening-day victory over Strasbourg has completely evaporated. Marseille enters Sunday riding a brutal four-match losing streak across all competitions, punctuated by a 1-0 league defeat to Rennes and a disastrous 4-1 midweek thrashing at the hands of Beşiktaş in the Europa League.[1][4][6]
"Marseille have made a disappointing start to Ligue 1, collecting just three points from their opening four matches and losing their last three," notes Alexandre Dubois in his preview for Sports Gambler. The defensive unit has been particularly porous, shipping eight goals over their last three outings.[4][6]
Across the pitch, Luis Enrique's Paris Saint-Germain are navigating their own turbulence. The reigning champions sit mid-table with eight points, looking disjointed as they attempt to integrate new pieces into a heavily retooled attack.[1]
While PSG managed to grind out a 1-0 victory over Brest last weekend, the performance did little to erase the memories of a 2-1 defeat to Monaco earlier in the month. The Parisian frontline—featuring Ousmane Dembélé, Ferran Torres, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia—has yet to consistently click against organized defenses.[1][2][6]
Injuries are forcing Enrique into uncomfortable tactical adjustments. Star right-back Achraf Hakimi is sidelined with a thigh injury, meaning 20-year-old midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery is expected to drop back and cover the defensive flank alongside Marquinhos, Willian Pacho, and Nuno Mendes.[2]
Marseille is dealing with its own medical ward. Midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia remains out with a muscle issue, leaving Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Himad Abdelli to anchor the center of the pitch. They will be tasked with feeding Amine Gouiri, who remains the lone bright spot in an otherwise sputtering attack.[2]
The atmosphere inside the 67,000-seat Vélodrome will be entirely one-sided. "French officials have barred PSG supporters from making the trip to Marseille for Sunday's much-anticipated game, citing concerns over possible fan violence," reports Franco Emilio Layus for Soy Futbol.[3]
That travel ban removes the away ultras, but it won't lower the temperature on the pitch. A draw does little to ease the pressure on either manager, while a fifth consecutive defeat for Génésio would leave Marseille's board facing an immediate crisis before the October international break even arrives.[4]
