The era of the classic Italian number nine—the relentless penalty-box predator who defined a decade of Serie A—is officially over. Ciro Immobile, the four-time Capocannoniere winner and Lazio's all-time leading scorer, has announced his retirement from professional football at age 36.[1][4]
Immobile terminated his contract with French Ligue 1 side Paris FC on Friday, stepping away from the game after a 17-year career. In an emotional address to his teammates, the striker cited the mounting physical toll and a desire to prioritize his family as the primary reasons for hanging up his boots.[1][2]
"It's a very difficult moment for me because it's the end of one of the greatest periods of my life," Immobile explained in his farewell video. "If I can no longer keep pushing when I'm in pain, when I'm training, if I can't give my best, it's hard. It's not an easy decision... but for me it's time to spend time with my family."[2]
He leaves the pitch with staggering numbers: 350 goals and 82 assists across 656 professional matches. In Serie A, his 201 goals rank eighth on the all-time list, cementing his status as one of the most prolific forwards in the history of the Italian top flight.[1][4]
While his career spanned 12 different clubs across four countries—including stints at Juventus, Borussia Dortmund, and Sevilla—Immobile's legacy is inextricably tied to the blue half of Rome. During his eight-year tenure at Lazio from 2016 to 2024, he transformed into a club icon, netting 207 goals in 340 appearances across all competitions to become their all-time top scorer.[2][6]
His absolute zenith arrived during the 2019-20 campaign. Immobile struck 36 times in the league, matching Gonzalo Higuain's single-season Serie A scoring record and capturing the European Golden Shoe—beating out global superstars for the continent's top scoring honor.[3][6]
On the international stage, Immobile earned 57 caps for the Azzurri, scoring 17 goals. His crowning achievement came during the delayed Euro 2020 tournament, where he spearheaded Italy's attack and helped secure the European Championship with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over England at Wembley Stadium.[2][5]
Following his departure from Lazio in 2024, Immobile embarked on a brief twilight journey. He spent time with Besiktas in Turkey and Bologna in Italy before joining Paris FC in February 2026. Despite contributing two goals in 12 appearances to help the newly promoted Parisian club stay in Ligue 1, the physical demands ultimately caught up with him.[2][6]
