Jon Rahm has officially rejected the restructuring terms for a post-bankruptcy LIV Golf, signaling his departure from the breakaway circuit he joined less than three years ago. During a federal bankruptcy hearing in New Jersey on Wednesday, the two-time major champion's legal team confirmed he will not participate in the league's proposed 2027 relaunch.[1][4]

The decision marks a critical blow to LIV Golf's survival efforts following the withdrawal of its Saudi Arabian financial backing earlier this year. "Mr. Rahm has independently reviewed the proposed terms of LIV 2.0 and has determined that those terms are unacceptable to him," Rahm's attorney, John Beck, told the court.[4]

Both parties are now actively negotiating a consensual separation agreement, with a target completion date of October 15. If a settlement is not reached by that deadline, Rahm's contract dispute will proceed to a broader bankruptcy court hearing scheduled for November 5, where he intends to fight the league's restructuring motions.[4][5]

The league's survival plan, backed by a $300 million commitment from private equity firm BC Partners, relies on transitioning players from guaranteed cash contracts to equity stakes. Under the proposed framework, players would collectively hold a 52.5 percent ownership share in the 10-tournament circuit, while investors take 45 percent and management retains the rest.[3]

The proposed equity split for LIV 2.0 under the BC Partners restructuring agreement.

Rahm's exit strips the proposed 2027 schedule of its biggest remaining star and primary creditor. The former world number one signed a multi-year deal in December 2023 reportedly worth over $300 million, and bankruptcy court filings indicate he is still owed upwards of $100 million in future guarantees from that original agreement.[4][5]

The departure follows a similar move by fellow Masters champion Sergio Garcia, who successfully petitioned the court earlier this week to terminate his contract. Legal experts anticipate a wider exodus of top-tier talent as players weigh the financial risks of the new equity structure against the competitive security of established global tours.[1]

Rahm's immediate playing future remains complicated by the fractured landscape of professional golf and the strict eligibility rules governing the major circuits. While he retained his DP World Tour membership by paying outstanding fines in May 2026, a return to the American-based PGA Tour presents significant regulatory hurdles.[5]

The PGA Tour previously offered a one-time reinstatement pathway for major champions in January 2026, a deal that Brooks Koepka accepted to secure his return. Rahm declined the offer at the time, and Tour executives have maintained that returning players must now serve a mandatory 12-month suspension from their last LIV appearance.[2][5]

That suspension timeline means Rahm would not be eligible for PGA Tour events until at least August 2027, leaving the European circuit as his primary competitive home. The 31-year-old is currently sidelined while awaiting the birth of his fourth child, having withdrawn from the recent Open de Espana in Madrid.[3][4]

His next confirmed eligibility window opens with the DP World Tour Play-Offs in the United Arab Emirates next month, pending the finalization of his LIV separation. The resolution of his contract will likely set a legal precedent for dozens of other players currently navigating the league's complex Chapter 11 proceedings.[3]
