For universities, adapting to this multi-modal reality is no longer optional—it is the defining factor in whether they will survive the coming demographic enrollment cliff.

The binary choice between living on campus or logging in from afar is dead. Across the United States, hybrid learning—blending in-person instruction with digital flexibility—is now the permanent, foundational infrastructure of higher education. Surveying Chief Online Learning Officers at two- and four-year institutions, the report found that student demand for online and hybrid learning continues to surge. Fifty-seven percent of respondents reported that enrollment of traditional undergraduates in purely face-to-face programs is stagnant, with another 24 percent reporting sharp declines.[2]

However, the shift toward hybrid learning does not mean the physical campus is obsolete. The 2025/2026 Education Engagement Index reveals exactly what modern students want from brick-and-mortar facilities. While hybrid remains the preferred model, campus presence delivers immense value when applied intentionally. Students attending campus three or more days per week report significantly stronger feelings of belonging, motivation, and overall value compared to those who stay entirely remote.

Surveying undergraduates across multiple institutions, the report found a growing preference for on-site learning during high-stakes activities. Student preference for in-person synchronous learning increased by 9 percentage points for lab work, 8 points for interactive lectures, and 6 points for exams. Students want hands-on experience when the subject demands it, but expect digital delivery for standard coursework.[3]

For universities facing a demographic cliff—where the number of traditional high school graduates is expected to drop sharply—hybrid models offer a lifeline. The financial impact is clear. A recent study highlighted by Fast Company found that just a 1 percent increase in the share of online course offerings correlates with an average increase of nearly 8,000 students across institutions nationwide. Hybrid learning is a measurable driver of scale and financial stability.[1]
