Global Motorsport Power Rankings: Márquez Peaks as Aitken Secures IMSA Crown

Marc Márquez closed the MotoGP title gap to two points with a dominant double at Motegi. Meanwhile, Jack Aitken officially clinched the 2026 IMSA GTP drivers' championship at Petit Le Mans.

October separates the contenders from the pretenders across global motorsport. With the Formula 1 grid catching its breath before the United States Grand Prix, the two-wheel and endurance paddocks are delivering late-season title drama.

In Japan, a reigning world champion just erased a massive points deficit to blow the MotoGP title fight wide open. Meanwhile, in Georgia, a dominant prototype campaign culminated in a coronation before the sun even set on Road Atlanta.[2][4]

From the high-speed braking zones of Motegi to the undulating sweeps of Petit Le Mans, momentum is shifting rapidly. Here is how the global power ranking stands as the 2026 racing calendar enters its final, decisive stretch.

Marc Márquez peaks at Motegi

Marc Márquez is officially the hottest rider on two wheels. The Ducati Lenovo factory star delivered a devastating sprint and grand prix double at the Motul Grand Prix of Japan, slashing his championship deficit to just two points.[2][3]

The MotoGP title fight has tightened to a two-point margin following the Japanese Grand Prix.

The nine-time world champion played a remarkably patient game during Sunday’s 24-lap feature. After Michelin withdrew the soft rear slick due to blistering, Márquez opted for the heat-resistant hard compound and spent the opening ten laps stalking the race leader.[1][3]

"The target was clear in the race; try to lead as soon as possible and when I was leading, try to control the race pace," Márquez said. He made his decisive move on lap 11 at Turn 9, slicing past his rival with precision.[1][2]

From there, Márquez streaked clear, crossing the line 1.363 seconds ahead to secure his 79th career victory. He has now won six of the last nine grands prix, completing five sprint-and-race doubles since the summer break to completely rewrite the championship narrative.[1][2][3]

Jack Aitken secures IMSA crown

Across the globe at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, Jack Aitken arrived at the 29th annual Motul Petit Le Mans with a singular objective. He held a commanding 147-point advantage in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTP standings, leaving his rivals needing a miracle.[4][6]

Aitken extended that margin to 151 points by qualifying fourth, ahead of Porsche Penske Motorsport rival Laurin Heinrich in seventh. That mathematical cushion meant Aitken only needed to take the green flag to secure the 2026 drivers' title, removing all suspense from the 10-hour endurance classic.[6]

Action Express Racing secured the IMSA GTP drivers' and team championships at Road Atlanta.

"You've definitely got one eye on the race start, and the other was just hoping that the car started and got out of pit lane," Aitken said. The No. 31 Action Express Racing Cadillac V-Series.R fired up perfectly, allowing him to lead the field into the opening hours.[5][6]

By rolling off the grid, Aitken officially clinched the GTP drivers' championship, while simultaneously securing the team title for Action Express and the manufacturers' crown for Cadillac. It capped a remarkably consistent 10-podium streak for General Motors' premier prototype program.[6][7]

Aitken contested the complete GTP season as the sole full-time driver in the No. 31 entry, with Earl Bamber and Frederik Vesti joining for endurance rounds. That standalone schedule made him the sole recipient of the drivers' trophy, separating his points total from his co-drivers.[6]

Jorge Martín holds the line

While Márquez has the momentum, Aprilia Racing’s Jorge Martín still holds the MotoGP championship lead. The 2024 world champion collected a vital 20 points at Motegi by finishing second, limiting the damage on a weekend where Ducati looked dominant.[2]

Aitken's mathematical advantage meant the championship was decided before the race began.

Martín led the opening ten laps in Japan and traded fastest laps with Márquez, proving the RS-GP26 has the raw pace to fight the factory Ducatis. It was his sixth runner-up finish of the 2026 campaign, showcasing the consistency required to defend a title.[1][2]

The title fight now heads immediately to the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit in Indonesia. Track temperatures there regularly nudge 60 degrees Celsius, forcing the entire grid onto the special heat-resistant rear slick to survive the punishing conditions.[3]

That specific Michelin allocation has historically favored Martín's Aprilia over the Ducati chassis. With 222 points still available and just two points separating the sport's two heavyweights, the Indonesian Grand Prix will be a defining battle in the 2026 season.[3]
