Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has officially retired from international cricket, bringing an end to a transformative 14-year career. The 38-year-old confirmed his decision on the Final Word podcast on Monday, shortly after being omitted from Australia's squad for the upcoming T20 series against England.[3]

Known globally as "The Big Show," Maxwell leaves the international stage as one of the most destructive white-ball batters of his generation. Across 286 appearances for his country, he amassed 7,226 runs and claimed 136 wickets, fundamentally changing how teams approach middle-order batting in limited-overs cricket.[1][2]

Maxwell's final outing in Australian colors came during the T20 World Cup in February 2026, where he took 2-13 against Oman. He had previously stepped away from One-Day Internationals in June 2025, citing the physical toll of the format following the Champions Trophy in Dubai.[1]

The decision to retire entirely crystallized after discussions with Australian team management regarding the squad's future direction. The national setup is increasingly focused on exposing younger players to international pressure ahead of the 2028 Olympics.[1]

Maxwell leaves the international stage with a joint-record five T20I centuries.

"We probably had numerous discussions before and after the T20 World Cup, and it was pretty open-ended," Maxwell said on the Final Word podcast, noting that there was no pressure from the team management to step away immediately.[3]

Maxwell had harbored a small hope of playing a farewell match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground later this month. Despite missing out on a fairytale send-off, he expressed complete understanding of the strategic pivot, noting that the national team needs to build its next core group.[3]

His legacy is anchored by three World Cup triumphs, including the 2015 and 2023 ODI titles and the 2021 T20 World Cup. He is one of only two men, alongside India's Rohit Sharma, to score five centuries in T20 internationals, and one of five Australians to record a hundred in all three formats.[1]

Maxwell's most defining performance remains his unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan during the 2023 ODI World Cup in Mumbai. Battling severe full-body cramps, he dragged Australia from 91-7 to successfully chase down a target of 292, an innings widely regarded as one of the greatest in the sport's history.[1][2]

Beyond his explosive batting, Maxwell claimed 136 international wickets with his off-spin.

Beyond his batting, Maxwell provided crucial tactical flexibility with his off-spin bowling and exceptional fielding. His ability to break partnerships and save runs in the inner ring made him a vital asset for multiple Australian captains over the past decade.[1]

While his international chapter has closed, Maxwell's professional career will continue on the global franchise circuit. He remains contracted to the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League through the 2026-27 season and is expected to feature in various T20 leagues worldwide.[2]

The retirement marks a definitive changing of the guard for Australian cricket as the team transitions toward a new era. Maxwell departs having redefined the boundaries of limited-overs batting, leaving behind a highlight reel that few players in the modern game can match.[1][3]
