For FC Cincinnati to survive the Eastern Conference playoff scramble, their defense had to stop bleeding points at home. On Wednesday night, the backline finally held the door shut. The Orange and Blue snapped a two-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over D.C. United at TQL Stadium, securing three critical points to stay above the postseason line.[1][3]

The win pushes Cincinnati to 39 points and eighth place in the East, creating breathing room with just four matches remaining in the 2026 regular season. D.C. United, meanwhile, remains stranded in 13th place with 33 points. The result flipped the script for a Cincinnati squad that had dropped consecutive home matches to New England and Columbus last week.[1][2]

"Like we've talked about, we need three points and we got that tonight," Cincinnati head coach Pat Noonan said after the final whistle. "We leaned on some experience tonight and I think guys were ready to fight the right way."[3]

The breakthrough came from an unlikely source in the 14th minute. Midfielder David Douděra, who joined the club from Sparta Prague earlier this year, pounced on a deflected ball inside the 18-yard box. He drove a tight-angle shot past D.C. goalkeeper Alex Bono to log his first career Major League Soccer goal.[1][3]

D.C. United refused to fold early, finding their equalizer just before halftime. In the 38th minute, midfielder João Peglow lofted a pass over the Cincinnati backline to Kimito Nono. The Japanese defender easily looped his shot past Roman Celentano, knotting the match at 1-1 with his third goal of the campaign.[1][2]

The decisive moment arrived 10 minutes into the second half via a set piece. After D.C. United conceded a foul 40 yards from goal, Brazilian playmaker Evander delivered a pinpoint free kick into a crowded penalty area. Defender Teenage Hadebe slid with his right foot extended, burying the ball before it could bounce to reclaim the lead.[1][3]

"It was an important goal for the team, an important goal for me," Hadebe said of his first tally for the club. "This year, of course, we've been struggling, but now we take one game at a time."[3]

The assist marked Evander's 16th across all competitions this season, tying him for the fifth-most in a single year in club history. From there, Cincinnati's defense locked down the perimeter. The backline trio of Hadebe, Kyle Smith, and Nick Hagglund suffocated D.C.'s attack, blocking four of the visitors' six second-half shots.[1][3]

Hagglund's performance anchored the defensive stand on a milestone night. The veteran center-back made his 180th appearance across all competitions, becoming Cincinnati's all-time leader in games played. He led the squad with 13 clearances and 17 total defensive contributions, earning Man of the Match honors in his first full 90-minute shift since May.[1][3]

The two sides will not have to wait long for a rematch. Because Wednesday's fixture was a makeup date for a weather postponement originally scheduled for September 5, Cincinnati and D.C. United will face off again this Saturday at Audi Field in Washington.[1][2]
