The late-summer racing calendar is traditionally a proving ground for riders finalizing their form ahead of the Vuelta a España, but this year, it is serving as a stage for remarkable resilience. At the Vuelta a Burgos in Spain, the peloton welcomed back several high-profile riders who have spent the summer battling back from severe injuries.[1][2]
Leading the charge is Scottish climber Oscar Onley of Netcompany-Ineos. Onley's season was derailed in June when a horrifying crash into a ravine at the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes left him with a shoulder injury, forcing him to miss his highly anticipated start at the Tour de France.[1][5]
On Wednesday, Onley emphatically announced his return to the top tier of the sport. In his very first race back since the crash, the 23-year-old conquered the summit finish at Valle del Sol to win Stage 2 of the Vuelta a Burgos.[2][3]
The finale was a grueling 3.4-kilometer ascent averaging a 7.6 percent gradient. Belgian prodigy Jarno Widar launched the initial sprint, but Onley and Lidl-Trek's Giulio Ciccone quickly overtook him. In a grinding head-to-head battle to the line, Onley found the extra gear to edge out Ciccone, claiming his first victory since joining the British squad.[3][4]
The victory also vaulted Onley into the overall race lead, giving him a four-second advantage in the general classification. "This hasn't been a good season for me so far; I've had a lot of setbacks and just not really got going," Onley admitted after the stage. "The goal wasn't even to win, it was just to get some racing in the legs, to be honest."[2][6]
The victory also vaulted Onley into the overall race lead, giving him a four-second advantage in the general classification.
Onley was not the only rider making a triumphant return on the slopes of Valle del Sol. Jay Vine of UAE Team Emirates also pinned on a race number in Burgos, marking the end of a grueling rehabilitation period following a mass crash at the Giro d'Italia in May.[1][6]
Vine's season has been marred by extreme bad luck. He suffered a fractured scaphoid after colliding with a kangaroo at the Tour Down Under in January, crashed out of the Volta a Catalunya, and then sustained a fractured elbow and a concussion in the Giro d'Italia pileup.[6]
Despite the physical and mental toll of repeated setbacks, Vine showed flashes of his trademark climbing brilliance on Wednesday. The Australian was the first rider to launch an attack inside the final kilometer of the Valle del Sol climb. While he was ultimately unable to make the move stick, his aggression signaled that his form is rapidly returning ahead of a potential Vuelta a España bid.[1]
While Onley and Vine celebrated their returns in Spain, the unforgiving nature of professional cycling dealt a cruel blow to another rider in Eastern Europe. At the Tour de Pologne, Visma | Lease a Bike's Anton Schiffer was forced to abandon the race after breaking his collarbone in a crash during Stage 3.[3][7]
The injury is a devastating setback for the 26-year-old German, who had just recovered from a previous collarbone fracture sustained during a training ride in mid-June. Schiffer had spent three weeks training at altitude in July to prepare for the second half of the season, only to suffer the exact same injury in his return to WorldTour racing.[3][7]
Schiffer's heartbreak underscores the precarious reality for riders navigating the late-season calendar. UAE Team Emirates is also closely monitoring Marc Soler, who fractured his pelvis in the same Giro d'Italia crash that sidelined Vine. Soler's rehabilitation has progressed steadily, and the team remains hopeful he can return in time to support their ambitions at the Vuelta.[6]
As the peloton inches closer to the start of the Spanish Grand Tour on August 22, the contrasting fortunes in Burgos and Poland highlight the sport's emotional extremes. For riders like Onley and Vine, their successful comebacks offer a powerful reminder that patience and resilience can salvage even the most difficult seasons.[1][5]
