Championship Picture: The Race for the Inaugural Spirit Series Crown Begins in Sydney

The major domestic netball seasons have officially concluded, shifting the sport's focus to the international stage and wiping the standings slate clean. Starting July 8, Netball Central in Sydney will host the inaugural Spirit Series, a four-day tournament that promises to deliver high-stakes competition and cultural celebration as four teams converge for a brand-new championship race.[3]

Head coach Jen Wright, who also serves as an assistant coach for GIANTS Netball, leads a 12-player squad that blends seasoned pathway athletes with fresh faces. The team includes five debutants—Mia Evans, Chloe Eyre, Darcy May-Martin, Aaliyah Sheppard, and Holly Stephens—who are eager to make their mark in the international arena.

The Black Swans previously made waves by finishing on top during the round-robin phase of the 2024 Pacific Series. Now, they face the challenge of replicating that success against fully-fledged national teams. Netball Australia's First Nations Pathway Manager, Beryl Friday, noted that competing against diverse international styles will provide invaluable exposure for the athletes, testing their adaptability and performance conditioning under pressure.

While the Black Swans aim to defend their home court, the Fiji Pearls arrive in Sydney with their eyes firmly fixed on long-term global standings. Under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Michelle Parsons, the Pearls have undergone a rigorous selection and training process over the past month.
