Latest

On October 19, investors pressured British artificial intelligence cloud provider Nscale to reduce its initial public offering valuation target from $30 billion to a range of $16 billion to $19 billion. The pushback coincided with a broader market selloff for AI infrastructure firms, including sharp declines for CoreWeave and Nebius.

The valuation standoff followed Microsoft's October 18 termination of an agreement to anchor Nscale's planned 50-megawatt AI data center in Loughton, Essex, removing the site's only publicly announced customer. The cancellation occurred after UK Power Networks informed Nscale that the site would not receive sufficient electricity until the early 2030s. Nscale stated that the London-wide grid constraints would not impact its other existing contracts with Microsoft.

How the story developed

On September 26, the London-based AI infrastructure developer secured $3.36 billion in pre-IPO convertible financing to fund the global expansion of vertically integrated, liquid-cooled AI data centers and power plants. The financing round was led by hedge fund Third Point.

The deal included an initial $2.36 billion tranche and a $1 billion commitment from Nvidia. Following the financing, the company filed to list on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker NSCL.

The planned US public listing was initially expected to value the startup at up to $35 billion. Nscale reported $103.4 billion in total contracted value for its AI cloud services.

However, only $2.6 billion of that contracted revenue comes from active, powered facilities. This disparity emerged as physical power grid constraints began stalling AI infrastructure projects.
