On October 15, Meta released the weights for its Muse Spark Open model, allowing developers to run the system locally without paying application programming interface fees. The release is optimized to operate on two paired Apple Mac Studio desktops requiring one terabyte of unified memory. The launch is intended to counter the growing dominance of Chinese open-weight models, such as Alibaba's Qwen, in the global developer ecosystem and reestablish a United States presence.
The Muse Spark Open model remains unavailable in the European Union due to regulatory concerns. Additionally, Meta has restricted the model's commercial use for massive enterprises.
How the story developed
On July 16, Meta launched Muse Spark 1.1, its first proprietary, closed-source artificial intelligence model. The release marked the end of the company's long-standing open-weight strategy and its era of freely distributing its most advanced artificial intelligence weights.
The pivot to a paid application programming interface was designed to fund a $145 billion artificial intelligence infrastructure buildout. The model was priced 75 percent lower than comparable offerings from competitors OpenAI and Anthropic. To redirect capital toward compute and hardware, Meta cut 8,000 jobs.
On October 13, Meta introduced its most advanced artificial intelligence systems to date, solidifying its transition toward proprietary models to fund escalating compute costs. The company released the new Muse Wonder model to developers via an application programming interface, while keeping its more powerful flagship model, Muse Wonder Full, strictly internal.
Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg stated that the new models had reached the artificial intelligence frontier, directly challenging OpenAI and Anthropic.
What to watch
- Independent developers have yet to verify the performance gap between the public Muse Wonder application programming interface version and the restricted internal Muse Wonder Full model.
