Real Madrid argues that the disciplinary action against their star winger ignores the emotional context of the match, demanding leniency for a player they feel was provoked. The Spanish Football Federation maintains that violent conduct—specifically grabbing an opponent by the hair—carries a mandatory minimum suspension regardless of the buildup, enforcing a strict interpretation of the rulebook.[1][4]

The clash of perspectives culminated in a severe penalty for Vinícius Júnior, who has been handed a four-match suspension by the federation's disciplinary committee. The ruling stems from a straight red card the 26-year-old Brazilian forward received during Real Madrid's 1-0 victory over Villarreal on October 10.[1][3]

The suspension sidelines Vinícius for a crucial stretch of the La Liga season, most notably ruling him out of the October 25 El Clásico against league leaders Barcelona. He will also miss domestic fixtures against Sevilla, Racing Santander, and Valencia, stripping the squad of a primary attacking threat.[1][5]

The defining incident occurred in the 73rd minute of the Villarreal match, roughly 20 minutes after Vinícius entered the pitch as a second-half substitute. The winger thought he had doubled Madrid's lead, prompting celebrations on the touchline, but a Video Assistant Referee review wiped the goal from the board.[3][4]

The four domestic fixtures Vinícius Júnior will miss due to the suspension.

The VAR check revealed that Vinícius had grabbed the hair of Villarreal defender Nathan Saliba while sprinting down the pitch in the buildup to the goal. Referee Isidro Díaz de Mera subsequently issued a straight red card for violent conduct, which sparked a furious reaction from the Madrid forward.[1][2]

The Disciplinary Breakdown

The federation divided the four-match ban into two distinct penalties to address both the physical foul and the subsequent fallout. Two matches were issued for the hair-pulling infraction itself, which the committee classified as violent conduct without the possibility of playing the ball.[1][4]

The remaining two matches were added specifically for the player's aggressive protests following the dismissal. According to the official match report filed by Díaz de Mera, Vinícius raised his voice and approached the official in an aggressive manner before being physically restrained by his teammates.[1][5]

Real Madrid manager José Mourinho expressed intense frustration over the situation, specifically targeting the timing of the federation's announcement. The disciplinary ruling was handed down on Wednesday, just two hours before Madrid kicked off a Champions League fixture against Roma in Italy.[4]

"Do you think it's normal for a player from a Spanish team, preparing for an important match that's also crucial for Spanish soccer, to find out about his four-match suspension just two hours before kickoff?" Mourinho asked reporters.[4]

Following the Villarreal match, Vinícius took to social media to address the situation directly with the club's supporters, acknowledging the impact his extended absence will have on the squad's title pursuit.[3]

"I am sorry to the team and the fans," the forward wrote.[3]

Real Madrid is expected to appeal the severity of the suspension, though Spanish media reports indicate an initial challenge has already been dismissed. The club now faces the prospect of traveling to Camp Nou to face a Barcelona side that currently holds a six-point advantage in the table.[1][2]
