Crucially, all prep tools—knives, cutting boards, mixing bowls, and peelers—are stored directly within this zone, eliminating the need to walk to a separate cabinet.[7]
The Cooking zone centers on the stove and oven. In a zoned kitchen, pots, pans, spatulas, and cooking oils are housed in deep drawers immediately adjacent to the heat source. This localized storage means the cook does not have to leave the stove unattended to retrieve a pan from the other side of the room.[7]
The Cleanup zone isolates the mess. By placing the sink, dishwasher, and pull-out trash bins in a single cluster, one person can load dishes or scrape plates without crossing into the Preparation or Cooking zones. This separation is what allows a zoned kitchen to support two or three people working at the same time.[7]
Consumable Storage, comprising the refrigerator and pantry, is positioned on the outer edge of the kitchen. This placement allows family members to grab a drink or a snack without entering the primary cooking area, further reducing traffic jams. Non-Consumable Storage holds serving dishes and rarely used appliances in the remaining cabinetry.[2][7]
The transition from triangles to zones also changes how cabinetry is specified. Designers are moving away from traditional upper cabinets with fixed shelves, favoring deep base drawers and pull-out pantry glides that bring the storage to the user.
