"When input is 90–98% familiar, learners can devote cognitive resources to noticing and acquiring the small amount of new language without being overwhelmed," Conti writes. This narrow band of comprehension allows adults to make hypotheses about grammatical rules naturally. If a student is forced to struggle through a paragraph where 20 percent of the vocabulary is foreign, their working memory is entirely consumed by translation, leaving no bandwidth for acquisition.[1]

In October 2025, the journal Frontiers in Psychology published a neuro-ecological critique of Krashen's original hypothesis. The researchers argued that converging evidence from brain scans shows language development is not merely a process of absorbing simplified input, but an active and embodied process supported by interaction, feedback, and multimodal engagement.[3]
This ecological perspective shifts the focus from the text itself to the environment in which it is consumed. The Frontiers authors point out that even in first-language acquisition, parents do not uniformly simplify their sentence structures. Instead, they make complex sentences comprehensible through gestures, intonation, and immediate physical context.
