When the Swedish Tax Authority restructured its offices, it capped headcounts based on a specific biological claim: the human brain is hardwired with a strict cognitive limit of 150 stable social relationships. Popularized by anthropologist Robin Dunbar in the 1990s, "Dunbar's number" became an organizational gospel. But when researchers at Stockholm University re-analyzed the foundational primate data in 2021, they found the math did not hold up. Publishing in Biology Letters, the team re-ran the regression models mapping primate brain size to social group size. They discovered that the 95% confidence interval for humans actually stretched from 4 to 520 individuals.[2]

Because the statistical variance is so massive, the Stockholm researchers concluded that "specifying any one number is futile." The human neocortex, they argued, does not contain a hardcoded 150-person cap, and treating the figure as a biological imperative ignores the vast flexibility of human social structures.[2]

Dunbar quickly defended his metric, arguing that the statistical critique misses the behavioral reality observed across human history. Writing in Social Science Space, he maintained that while the exact number is an average rather than a strict ceiling, the clustering around 150 is too consistent to dismiss as a statistical artifact.[1]

Because the neocortex handles complex cognition, Dunbar theorized that its volume dictates how many individual relationships a primate can track. Extrapolating that line to the volume of the human brain yielded a mean group size of roughly 150.[2][4]

Dunbar explained the principle informally as "the number of people you would not feel embarrassed about joining uninvited for a drink if you happened to bump into them in a bar."[4]

The 150 limit is actually just the outer boundary of a series of nested circles of intimacy. The rise of digital networks prompted sociologists to ask whether social media could bypass this biological bottleneck. The Oxford Scientist explored whether platforms like Facebook and Twitter, which handle the logistical work of remembering birthdays and life updates, have expanded our cognitive capacity for connection.

The data suggests the limit remains intact. While a user might accumulate 2,000 digital friends, behavioral studies of online interactions show a different reality. An analysis of 1.7 million Twitter users over six months found that even highly active users maintained stable, reciprocal conversations with a maximum of 100 to 200 people.[3]

The limitation is not merely a matter of memory storage, but of time and emotional bandwidth. Maintaining a stable relationship requires frequent interaction, empathy, and shared experiences—resources that remain strictly finite regardless of how easily two people can exchange digital messages.[5][6]
