Skye Blakely is officially the best gymnast in the world, burying five years of physical heartbreak to capture the all-around gold medal in Rotterdam. The 21-year-old University of Florida junior scored a 55.733 on Friday to win the 2026 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, securing the sport's biggest individual prize outside the Olympics.[1][3]
The victory completes a grueling comeback for the American veteran, who watched two consecutive Olympic dreams vanish to devastating injuries. Blakely tore an elbow ligament while warming up for the 2021 Olympic Trials, then ruptured her right Achilles tendon on the floor exercise just two days before the 2024 trials.[1][2]
"There was many days where I wanted to give up and just thought I couldn't do it anymore," Blakely said after wrapping herself in the American flag. "Throughout the meet, I was telling myself, 'Do it for the girl in 2021 and the girl in 2024 who couldn't do everything, just fight for her.'"[1][2]
Blakely built her winning margin on pristine execution rather than raw difficulty, executing a conservative plan tailored for the long road to the 2028 Los Angeles Games. She opened with a 14.200 on a double-twisting Yurchenko vault, stuck her uneven bars dismount for a 14.400, and delivered a flawless 14.200 on the balance beam.[1][3]
That beam routine, performed under immense pressure, gave her a commanding one-point lead heading into the final rotation. A steady 12.933 on the floor exercise was more than enough to hold off Russian neutral athlete Liudmila Roshchina, who took silver with a 55.199, and China's Ke Qinqin, who claimed bronze at 55.032.[2][3]
The competition shifted dramatically in the opening rotation when top qualifier Kaylia Nemour of Algeria overstepped her springboard on vault, forcing her to abandon her planned difficulty. Nemour fought back with a spectacular uneven bars routine but ultimately finished fourth at 54.998, missing the bronze medal by a heartbreaking 0.034 points.[1][2]
Fellow American Claire Pease, who posted the highest all-around score during Wednesday's team final, finished seventh overall with a 54.232 after falling off the balance beam. Despite the costly setback, Pease rebounded to record the highest floor exercise score of the night with a massive 13.733.[2][3]
Blakely's triumph makes her the ninth American woman to win the world all-around title, and the first to do so in the middle of an active NCAA career. The gold medal extends a 23-year streak of United States gymnasts reaching the all-around podium at every World Championship and Olympic Games since 2003.[1][3]
