The first three weeks of the 2026-27 NHL season have officially separated the true contenders from the early-autumn mirages. The opening 10 games are where systems take hold and goaltending regressions hit hard. Right now, the league's elite tier is already pulling away from the pack.

At the absolute summit sit the Carolina Hurricanes. Boasting an 8-2-1 record and a league-leading 219 points in the latest Super 16 voting, they remain the undisputed team to beat. They haven't skipped a beat since the puck dropped in October.[1][2]

Carolina is doing consistent damage on the rush while maintaining a suffocating defensive structure. They are smothering opponents in the neutral zone, forcing turnovers that immediately translate into high-danger scoring chances. It is a formula that looks entirely playoff-ready in October.[2]

Out West, the Vegas Golden Knights are taking a distinctly different route to the top of the standings: pure, unadulterated firepower. Sitting at 8-3-0, Vegas is the only team in the league scoring more than four goals per game.[2][5]

They are overwhelming teams before the second intermission, all while keeping their goals-against average under 2.5. When an offense is clicking at that elite level, it gives the defense massive margins for error, and Vegas is exploiting that freedom perfectly.[2]

Early season records for the NHL's top contenders.

Meanwhile, the Edmonton Oilers are making their own statement at 7-1-1, driven by the usual suspects. Connor McDavid is already in terrifying mid-season form, entering the week with a league-leading 23 points on six goals and 17 assists.[8]

"It's easy to start between the pipes with this offense in front of you," notes The Big Lead's Kyle Amore. Edmonton's goaltending has held up its end of the bargain, allowing their elite top line to dictate the pace of every single matchup.[2]

The Oilers are also getting massive contributions from the blue line. Defenseman Evan Bouchard currently tops the early Norris Trophy power rankings, driving possession and anchoring a power play that remains the most lethal unit in the sport.[3]

Don't sleep on the New York Rangers, who have turned Madison Square Garden into an absolute fortress. The Blueshirts are a perfect 5-0-0 at home and boast a 91.7 percent penalty kill, allowing one or fewer goals in three of their early contests.[7]

Alexis Lafrenière has been a revelation, tying for second in the NHL with seven goals and extending his early-season goal streak to four straight games. Goaltender Dylan Garand has also stepped up, earning back-to-back wins to solidify the crease.[5][7]

Further north, the Boston Bruins are quietly surging up the ranks with a 7-2-1 record. Goaltender Jeremy Swayman already has six wins under his belt, providing the exact kind of stability Boston needs to navigate a brutal Atlantic Division schedule.[4][5]

Elite goaltending performances through the opening weeks of the season.

David Pastrnak is fueling the offense with four goals and eight assists, elevating the Bruins back into the top 10 of nearly every consensus ranking. Their underlying numbers are solid, and the top six forwards are playing elite hockey.[2][4][5]

Goaltending is defining the early success of several dark-horse contenders. The Dallas Stars (5-3-1) are leaning heavily on Jake Oettinger, who has been electric with a .945 save percentage through the opening weeks of the campaign.[2][5]

In Saint Paul, the Minnesota Wild (6-2-2) are riding a similar wave. Jesper Wallstedt boasts a 1.99 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage, keeping the Wild undefeated at home before embarking on a grueling five-game Western road trip.[8]

"You get into the 10 through 20 mark, it's now really being consistent in how we want to play," said Wild coach John Hynes. "Playing winning hockey, just keeping building our game where it becomes more and more automatic."[8]

Finally, the expansion Utah Mammoth are proving they belong in the heavyweight conversation. At 7-3-0, they are strangling opponents defensively and sitting just behind Vegas and Edmonton in the Western Conference hierarchy. The parity is real, but the elite tier is officially on notice.[1][2]
