Iowa Surges to No. 2 as Northwestern Holds Top Spot in NCAA Field Hockey Standings

The race for the 2026 NCAA Division I field hockey championship has already turned into a high-stakes Midwest duel at the top of the standings. Defending national champion Northwestern holds the No. 1 spot, but the surging University of Iowa Hawkeyes have firmly established themselves as the primary challengers, climbing to No. 2 in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA National Coaches Poll.

Iowa's ascent has been the defining storyline of the early season. After opening the year with statement victories over perennial Atlantic Coast Conference powerhouses North Carolina and Wake Forest, the Hawkeyes have refused to slow down. On Sunday, September 13, Iowa improved to a flawless 6-0 record by dismantling No. 14 Louisville 4-2 at Lakeside Field in Evanston, Illinois.[2][6]

The victory over the Cardinals showcased Iowa's lethal offensive duo of Fréderique van Cleef and Dionne van Aalsum. Van Cleef opened the scoring just under eight minutes into the match, finishing a backdoor feed from Jordan Byers. Meanwhile, the Northwestern Wildcats remain the team to beat. Fresh off their 2025 national title—where they defeated Princeton in double overtime—the Wildcats opened 2026 as the unanimous preseason No. 1 and have maintained that position through the September 8 poll.[4]

Northwestern boasts a 4-0 record and features a roster bolstered by elite international experience. Standout Ashley Sessa recently returned from the 2026 FIH World Cup, where she scored the United States' lone field goal against Germany. Further down the standings, the national picture remains volatile. North Carolina, which started the season ranked No. 2, tumbled to No. 10 after their opening-weekend losses to Iowa and Michigan—marking the Tar Heels' lowest ranking since November 2021. Conversely, programs like Liberty (No. 13) and Syracuse (No. 9) have capitalized on early-season momentum to solidify their playoff resumes.[2][5]
