Heavyweight Boxing Enters 'Open Season' as Usyk Vacates Titles

The heavyweight boxing landscape has been completely reset. For the first time in years, the sport's most glamorous division is wide open, triggered by Oleksandr Usyk's decision to vacate three of the four major world titles.

On June 26, the 39-year-old undefeated Ukrainian announced he was relinquishing the WBA, WBC, and IBF belts. Boasting a flawless 25-0 professional record, Usyk stated he wanted to make the titles available so the "next in line can fight for them," while he prepares for a final "last dance" retirement bout.

The mass vacation immediately shattered the bottleneck that had kept the division stagnant during the quest for an undisputed champion. Sanctioning bodies are now scrambling to crown new titleholders, setting up a thrilling summer and autumn of high-stakes matchups.

The World Boxing Council (WBC) was the first to act, officially elevating interim titleholder Agit Kabayel to full champion status. The undefeated German contender had been waiting patiently for a mandatory shot at Usyk, and his elevation instantly makes him a primary target for the division's elite.

Meanwhile, the World Boxing Association (WBA) is expected to elevate its 'Regular' champion, Russian powerhouse Murat Gassiev, to 'Super' champion status. Gassiev, who previously unified the cruiserweight division before moving up, is scheduled to defend his current belt against German challenger Peter Kadiru on July 11 in Moscow.[1]

A victory for Gassiev over Kadiru would likely cement his position as the WBA's undisputed kingpin, though Kadiru enters the bout highly motivated to spring an upset on hostile ground and capture the belt for himself.[1]

The most chaotic situation surrounds the International Boxing Federation (IBF) title. The sanctioning body has ordered a clash between its top two available contenders: 33-year-old Cuban technician Frank Sanchez and 21-year-old British phenom Moses Itauma.

Sanchez recently re-established his championship credentials with a devastating second-round knockout of Richard Torrez Jr. in Egypt, making him a formidable hurdle for any rising star looking to capture the vacant gold.

However, the IBF's mandate creates a massive scheduling dilemma for Itauma. The British prospect is already contracted to face the dangerous Croatian veteran Filip Hrgovic on August 29 at London's O2 Arena.

Promoter Frank Warren and Queensberry Promotions must now decide whether to risk Itauma's mandatory status against Hrgovic—a bout Itauma has called his "toughest fight"—or attempt to pivot directly into the Sanchez title clash.

The only major belt Usyk did not vacate last month was the World Boxing Organization (WBO) title, which is currently held by Britain's Daniel Dubois. Dubois captured the WBO crown in May following a bloody, unforgettable 11th-round knockout of Fabio Wardley.

That Manchester bout saw Dubois survive two early knockdowns—including one just ten seconds into the first round—before systematically wearing down the previously unbeaten Wardley with thunderous jabs and heavy right hands.[2]

Dubois's reign, however, will face an immediate test. Wardley has reportedly activated his rematch clause, setting the stage for a highly anticipated second chapter to their domestic war later this year.[2]

For boxing fans, the fragmentation of the heavyweight crown is largely being viewed as a positive development. Rather than a single champion fighting once a year, the division is now guaranteed to feature four active titleholders eager to defend their belts and eventually pursue fresh unification bouts.
