Georgia Taylor-Brown and Dorian Coninx Claim Dramatic Victories at WTCS Karlovy Vary

Georgia Taylor-Brown stood on the top step of a World Triathlon Championship Series podium for the first time in more than three years on Sunday, conquering a rain-soaked, crash-strewn course in Karlovy Vary. Hours later, France’s Dorian Coninx delivered a tactical masterclass to win the men’s race, surviving an astonishing 29:16 10-kilometer run split from Olympic champion Alex Yee. The September 13 events marked the final regular-season stop of the 2026 WTCS calendar, delivering massive momentum shifts just ten days before the Grand Final in Pontevedra, Spain.[1][2][3]

The Czech spa town of Karlovy Vary is notorious for its brutal Olympic-distance layout, featuring a seven-lap bike course with 20-percent gradients and cobbled descents. On Sunday morning, a 13-degree Celsius air temperature and slick roads turned the women's race into a battle of attrition. Defending Karlovy Vary champion Beth Potter set the early pace in the 1.5-kilometer swim, exiting the water in 17:53, but the real damage was done on two wheels.[2]

As the women navigated the treacherous descents, multiple athletes went down, pushing the number of did-not-finishes near double digits. Sensing the hesitation in the chase pack, Taylor-Brown, American Taylor Spivey, and Austria’s Therese Feuersinger launched a decisive breakaway. The trio worked seamlessly over the 40.8-kilometer ride, extending a one-minute gap at the halfway mark to a massive 2 minutes and 31 seconds by the time they reached Transition 2.[2]

"I'm quite emotional about it," Taylor-Brown told World Triathlon after the race. "I didn't think I was ever going to get there again, to be honest. I kinda settled with playing with the girls at the front and in the top six, so I'm just really happy I could make the race today and there was a group of three of us who really pushed at the front and worked well together."[4]

Spivey was the first out of T2, but Taylor-Brown surged past her on the first of four 2.5-kilometer run laps. The British star never looked back, breaking the tape in 2:03:05. Spivey held on for her second consecutive Karlovy Vary silver medal in 2:03:41. Behind them, reigning world champion Lisa Tertsch of Germany produced the fastest run of the day—a blistering 33:34—to overhaul Feuersinger and claim bronze in 2:04:33.[2][4]

By the time the men lined up in the afternoon, the roads had dried and temperatures climbed to 19 degrees Celsius. Italy’s Alessio Crociani led the swim in 16:14, but the race was defined by a four-man breakaway on the bike. Coninx, fellow Frenchman Léo Bergère, Hungary’s Márk Dévay, and Austria’s Tjebbe Kaindl escaped the main field, building a buffer while pre-race favorite Yee languished in the chase pack.[3]

Kaindl launched a bold solo attack on the final bike lap, hitting T2 with a 12-second advantage over Coninx. Yee, meanwhile, racked his bike facing a massive 2-minute and 12-second deficit. What followed was one of the most spectacular run performances of the 2026 season.[1][3]

The Olympic champion began carving through the field at an unsustainable pace. After just one lap, Yee had chopped the gap to 1:33. By the halfway mark, he was 58 seconds behind the leaders and moving into fourth place. Up front, Coninx had dropped Kaindl and was pushing his own limits to keep the charging Briton at bay.[3]

With one kilometer remaining, Yee blew past Kaindl to take second place, but he ran out of real estate to catch the leader. Coninx crossed the line in 1:50:50, high-fiving the crowd down the finishing chute to win by exactly 10 seconds. Yee's 1:51:00 finish was anchored by a 29:16 run split on a course that rarely yields sub-30-minute times. Kaindl held on for third in 1:51:07, securing his first career WTCS podium.[3]

The results fundamentally alter the landscape heading into the September 23-27 Championship Finals in Pontevedra. Cassandre Beaugrand holds a perfect 4,000-point score atop the women's standings, with Potter sitting on 3,775 and Sweden’s Tilda Månsson on 3,636. Taylor-Brown's victory vaults her into seventh, proving she remains a lethal threat in championship racing.[2]
