FIH Launches Inaugural Youth Hockey5s World Cup in Egypt to Restore Under-18 Pathway

The international field hockey calendar just got a massive, high-speed addition for its next generation of stars. On Thursday, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) officially unveiled the inaugural Youth Hockey5s World Cup, a landmark under-18 tournament set to take over Ismailia, Egypt, from December 7 to 12, 2026.[1][2]

The stakes for this launch could not be higher for the sport's developmental pipeline. After the COVID-19 pandemic forced the postponement of the 2022 Youth Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee dealt field hockey a heavy blow by relegating it to a non-medal "Engagement Sport" for the upcoming Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics.[2][3]

The Ismailia showdown will feature 12 men's and 12 women's national teams battling in the Hockey5s format. For the uninitiated, Hockey5s is the sport's answer to Rugby Sevens or 3x3 basketball—a blistering, small-sided game played on a court roughly half the size of a traditional pitch, surrounded by boundary boards that keep the ball in constant play.[1][2]

From December 7 to 9, players and staff will cycle through an Athlete Talent Camp focused on tactical skills, Olympic values, and long-term physical wellbeing. The developmental mandate extends to the sidelines as well, ensuring the sport's infrastructure grows alongside its players.[1][3]

A parallel Youth Leadership Camp will run throughout the tournament to train the next wave of match officials. Every participating nation is required to nominate one young umpire between the ages of 18 and 25 to officiate and train, with successful candidates earning an FIH Level 1 Umpiring Award or a Youth Leadership Award.[1][3]

Awarding the inaugural hosting rights to Egypt is a calculated geopolitical move by the FIH. The federation is aggressively targeting Africa as a growth market, and the Ismailia tournament is designed to showcase the continent's capacity to stage world-class hockey events while leaving a tangible infrastructure legacy behind.[2][3]
