Canucks Sign Defenseman Zeev Buium to Eight-Year, $75 Million Extension

The Vancouver Canucks just pushed all their chips to the center of the table on a 20-year-old blue-liner. On Friday, the club locked down defenseman Zeev Buium with a massive eight-year, $75.04 million contract extension, ending any speculation about his future in British Columbia and cementing him as the cornerstone of their post-Quinn Hughes rebuild.[1][6]

Handing $75 million to a defender with exactly 76 games of NHL experience is a gamble, but it is the exact kind of calculated risk modern front offices have to take. Cap analysts project the NHL's upper limit will rise to roughly $113.5 million by the time Buium's extension begins. Selected 12th overall in the 2024 NHL Draft, the San Diego native has spent the last three years collecting hardware at every level.
