The Stade Bollaert-Delelis was rocking on Friday night as RC Lens finally found their footing in the 2026-27 Ligue 1 campaign, handing Olympique Lyonnais their first defeat of the season in a gritty 2-1 victory.[2]
For a club that finished as runners-up last season but stumbled violently out of the gate this autumn, the result was a massive exhale. It also marked the first managerial victory for Yannick Cahuzac, who took the helm after Dino Toppmöller was dismissed just four matches into the schedule.
All the work put in over the last three weeks paid off today, Lens midfielder Michaël Cuisance told local reporters. The victory vaulted the Sang et Or from a dismal 15th place up to seventh, securing seven points from five matches.[3]
Lyon arrived in northern France sitting second in the table and carrying an unbeaten record, with a golden chance to leapfrog AS Monaco for the top spot. Instead, Paulo Fonseca’s squad looked entirely disjointed during the opening half, struggling to break through a compact and aggressive Lens defensive block.[2]
Defensively we had problems because the team was too stretched and did not press the way we wanted, Fonseca admitted in his post-match press conference. And when we had the ball, we lost it too quickly. We gave the first 45 minutes to Lens.[4]
The hosts punished that lethargy in the 35th minute through 35-year-old veteran Florian Sotoca. Chesting down a precise pass inside the penalty area, Sotoca swivelled sharply and hammered a volley past Lyon's keeper to ignite the 90th consecutive sold-out crowd.[1][3]
Lens kept their foot on the gas after the break, anchored by a vintage midfield performance from Florian Thauvin. The playmaker generated a match-high 0.43 expected goals and created five chances, pulling the strings in the final third and keeping Lyon pinned back.[3]
Thauvin's vision paid off in the 76th minute when he delivered a pinpoint cross to left-back Matthieu Udol. Udol rose above the Lyon defense to head home his second goal in as many games, doubling the Lens advantage to 2-0 and seemingly putting the match out of reach.[1][2]
The defender’s celebration, however, would be short-lived as the match descended into utter chaos just eight minutes later. In the 84th minute, Udol mistimed a clumsy challenge on Lyon's highly touted teenager Khalis Merah, leaving the referee with a major decision to make.
Referee Jeremy Stinat immediately produced a straight red card for the foul, reducing Lens to ten men. The sudden dismissal completely shifted the momentum for the final frantic minutes, offering the visitors an unexpected lifeline just when they looked beaten.
Lyon struck back almost instantly on the ensuing sequence. Merah pounced on a rare defensive slip by Jonathan Gradit to cut the deficit to 2-1, forcing Cahuzac to frantically reorganize his backline and pack the penalty area to survive stoppage time.[3]
The backline trio of Gradit, Ruben Aguilar, and the Lens goalkeeper absorbed the late siege masterfully. The defensive unit won a combined 23 duels in their own penalty area, frustrating a Lyon attack that had averaged over two goals per match prior to Friday.[3]
Despite a late barrage of crosses aimed at returning forward Loïs Openda, the Lens defense held firm to secure the three points. Lyon finished the night with 52 percent possession and 15 total shots, but only managed seven on target against a resolute home side.[2]
Fonseca pointed to the tight turnaround following the October international break as a major factor in his team's sluggish start. I don't want to make excuses, but that's the reality, the Lyon manager noted. We had one day to prepare for the match.[4]
The defeat leaves Lyon stranded on 11 points, two points adrift of league leaders Monaco. They must quickly regroup and fix their defensive shape before hosting last season's UEFA Conference League champions, Crystal Palace, in a crucial Europa League clash on Thursday.[2]
