Match report

Paris FC Stuns Marseille 3-2 at the Vélodrome Behind Lassine Sinayoko Hat-Trick

Lassine Sinayoko scored three goals, including a 25-second opener and a late penalty, to hand Paris FC their first-ever away victory over Olympique de Marseille.

When André-Pierre Gignac scored after 20 seconds for Olympique de Marseille in September 2014, the Stade Vélodrome erupted in celebration. On Sunday, September 6, 2026, the exact same stadium fell completely silent just 25 seconds after kickoff, but for the opposite reason. Paris FC's Lassine Sinayoko finished a rapid attacking move to put the visitors ahead, setting the tone for a historic 3-2 away victory.[1][5]

The result marks Paris FC's first-ever win at Marseille, a massive statement of intent from the capital club early in the 2026-27 Ligue 1 campaign. Under manager Liam Rosenior, the newly promoted side arrived at one of France's most intimidating venues and executed a pragmatic, ruthless game plan. While Marseille dominated the ball, Paris FC dominated the decisive moments.[3][5]

The match opened at a frantic pace. Left-back Luca Koleosho slipped behind the Marseille defense almost immediately after the opening whistle, squaring the ball for Sinayoko to silence the home crowd. It was the earliest goal Marseille had conceded in a league match since April 2024, and it forced Bruno Genesio's side to chase the game from the first minute.[1][4]

Marseille responded quickly. In the eighth minute, Amine Gouiri pounced on a mishit back pass from Paris FC's Adama Camara to level the score at 1-1. Gouiri, who now has four goals in Marseille's first three league games, looked poised to turn the momentum back in the hosts' favor.[3][5]

Key figures from Paris FC's historic away victory.

But Paris FC refused to buckle. In the 19th minute, Pablo Pagis delivered a precise cross into the box, finding an unmarked Sinayoko who headed home his second goal of the night. The visitors entered the halftime break leading 2-1, having absorbed heavy pressure while remaining lethal on the counter-attack.[2][4]

The second half saw Marseille double down on their possession advantage, eventually holding 60.6 percent of the ball and completing 644 passes to Paris FC's 420. That sustained pressure paid off in the 54th minute when Amine Harit teed up Gouiri for a close-range volley from a tight angle, equalizing once again at 2-2.[2][6]

For the next thirty minutes, Marseille pushed aggressively for a winner, utilizing their aerial advantage and pinning Paris FC deep in their own half. Goalkeeper Kevin Trapp and the Paris FC back line held firm, clearing their lines 17 times and winning crucial ground duels to frustrate the hosts.[2]

The decisive twist arrived in the 85th minute. A shot from Paris FC substitute Moses Simon struck the arm of Marseille defender CJ Egan-Riley inside the penalty area. Following a VAR review, referee Clement Turpin pointed to the spot. Sinayoko stepped up and converted the penalty low to the left, completing his hat-trick and sealing the 3-2 victory.[2][3][5]

Paris FC generated significantly higher shot quality despite holding less than 40 percent of possession.

"For now, I just want to win the next match," Paris FC manager Liam Rosenior told reporters after the historic win. "We believe we can achieve something in the long run by building things up. But in the short term, we have to keep working hard, stay humble and focus only on the next game."[3][4]

The underlying numbers validate Paris FC's smash-and-grab approach. Despite seeing far less of the ball, the visitors generated 18 total shots to Marseille's 14, and led the expected goals (xG) battle 3.09 to 1.31. They created four big chances to Marseille's three, proving that their transitions were consistently more dangerous than the hosts' sustained possession.[2]

Paris FC manager Liam Rosenior has guided the newly promoted side to an unbeaten start in Ligue 1.

The victory lifts Paris FC to seven points from their opening three matches, placing them second in the early Ligue 1 table behind AS Monaco. For Marseille, the defeat marks their second consecutive loss after a promising 4-0 opening weekend victory over Strasbourg, leaving Genesio with defensive questions to answer.[3][5]

Sinayoko's performance, meanwhile, enters the history books. He became the first opposing player to score a hat-trick against Marseille at the Vélodrome in 14 years, a feat that cements his status as one of the league's most dangerous forwards in the early weeks of the season. Paris FC will look to carry this momentum into their next fixture against Olympique Lyonnais, while Marseille must regroup before facing Stade Rennais.[1][5]
