UFC 331 Preview: Van and Pantoja Run It Back While Tsarukyan Meets Ruffy in L.A.

The Octagon touches down in Los Angeles on September 19, and UFC 331 is carrying the kind of unresolved tension that only a freak injury can create. Since that anticlimactic coronation, the 24-year-old Van has proven he belongs at the summit. He defended the belt with a blistering fifth-round TKO over Tatsuro Taira at UFC 328 in May, cementing his status as a legitimate titleholder rather than a placeholder.[1]

Pantoja, now 36, enters Los Angeles on a mission to reclaim the throne he held for two-and-a-half years. Before the injury, the Brazilian had defended the flyweight title four times against top contenders like Brandon Royval and Steve Erceg. A victory at UFC 331 would make him just the third flyweight in promotional history to reclaim the championship, joining Brandon Moreno and Deiveson Figueiredo.[1]

The co-main event carries equally heavy divisional implications, as No. 2 ranked lightweight Arman Tsarukyan faces surging knockout artist Mauricio Ruffy in a five-round title eliminator. The winner is widely expected to challenge current lightweight champion Justin Gaethje in early 2027.[1][2][3]

Further down the main card, a fascinating veteran crossroads bout awaits at featherweight. Former Bellator dual-champion Patricio "Pitbull" Freire meets South Korean action fighter Doo Ho Choi in a matchup that guarantees fireworks.[2][6]

Freire has openly stated this is the final fight on his current UFC contract. After a rocky 1-2 start in the Octagon, the 37-year-old Brazilian is treating the September 19 clash as a high-stakes job interview.
