PGA Tour Approves Sweeping Two-Tier Overhaul for 2028 as Global Golf Reunifies

The PGA Tour’s Policy Board just tore up the traditional playbook, officially approving a two-tier membership model on Monday that will fundamentally restructure professional golf starting in 2028.[1][5]

Announced Tuesday morning by CEO Brian Rolapp, the sweeping overhaul establishes an elite "Championship Series" consisting of 20 premium tournaments, each boasting $20 million purses. Those events will sit on equal footing with the four majors and The Players Championship.[1][5]

Running directly beneath that top flight will be a concurrent "Challenger Series." The secondary circuit will feature significantly smaller prize pools but offer the ultimate prize: direct promotion pathways into the heavyweight division.[1]

The stakes for the immediate future are now locked. The 2027 season will serve as the final campaign under the current FedEx Cup points system, effectively turning the entire year into a massive qualifying school for the inaugural 2028 Championship Series.[1]

"Through new eligibility criteria and supporting pathways into the PGA Tour, the new competitive model is designed to reward excellence and ensure there is always a clear path for top performers at every stage of their career," Rolapp stated in the official release.[1]

The timing of the restructure is impossible to ignore, arriving just days after LIV Golf filed for bankruptcy following the withdrawal of its Saudi Arabian funding beyond this year.[2]

With LIV 1.0 officially in the dirt and player contracts expiring, a mass exodus back to the traditional ecosystem is imminent. But Rolapp made it explicitly clear that the PGA Tour is not rolling out a red carpet for returning defectors.[2]

The commissioner confirmed there are no plans to reintroduce the penalty-and-return schemes that players like Brooks Koepka utilized earlier this year. The door is open, but the fast track is closed.[2]

That hardline stance means major champions like Jon Rahm and Cameron Smith will likely have to grind their way back to the American circuit by logging heavy starts on the DP World Tour throughout 2027.[2]

Across the Atlantic, the European circuit is already capitalizing on the sport's reunification. The DP World Tour announced its 2027 schedule will restore the historic Singapore Open and Hong Kong Open, cementing a renewed strategic alliance with the Asian Tour.[3][4]

The Asian Tour recently severed its remaining ties with LIV Golf, bringing the global calendar back into alignment. The Singapore Open, last played as a DP World Tour event in 2012, returns with Deutsche Bank locked in as a title sponsor through 2029.[3][4]

The Hong Kong Open, which last featured on the European schedule in 2018, also makes its official return. Rory McIlroy, speaking from the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, praised the restored global footprint.[3][4]

"I think it's great with this partnership with the Asian Tour again, we have the Hong Kong Open back and the Singapore Open back," McIlroy noted on Tuesday. "They have quite a big expat community, and you can get quite a lot of people to those events that know golf."[4]

The battle lines for the next 18 months are now drawn. Every stroke hit in 2027 will carry the dual weight of immediate survival and 2028 elite status, setting up the most ruthless qualifying campaign the sport has ever seen.[1][5]
