"Quite a number of them are on the verge of becoming unstable and remain stable today only because of the presence of that ice," Ravanel said, noting the direct correlation between the heatwaves and the structural failures. The extreme melting also forced operators to dismantle the peak's traditional ice tunnel, a familiar structure used for years by mountaineers heading onto the glacier, after it became structurally unsound and unsafe for public use.[4]

"We weep for our mountain, the way it's changing. It hits us in the gut," said Stéphane Bozon, a deputy mayor in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, noting that crevasses and rock collapses had made key areas impossible to traverse safely.[4][5][6]

The 250,000-ton ice mass remains under continuous monitoring by the Valle d'Aosta regional authorities due to the persistent risk of a catastrophic release into the Val Ferret below, a scenario that has previously forced road closures and localized evacuations.[1][2][4]

While surface air temperatures will inevitably drop as the season transitions into autumn, researchers note that the thermal energy absorbed during the extraordinary summer will continue to penetrate deeper into the rock mass.
