On a winter morning in April 2014, a 12-year-old male lion slipped out of Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park and killed a seven-year-old boy named Elton in a neighboring village. The tragedy forced local zoologist Moreangels Mbizah to confront a stark reality about the limits of traditional conservation boundaries. “I realised that protecting lions inside the park meant very little if we were not also protecting people living alongside them,” Mbizah told Inter Press Service.
