Bristol Aztecs Seize Control of BAFA Premiership South Standings with Undefeated Run

The Bristol Aztecs have seized absolute control of the British American Football Association (BAFA) Premiership South standings, cementing their status as the premier domestic franchise in the United Kingdom. Halfway through the 2026 summer campaign, the defending national champions remain undefeated at 5–0, dismantling opponents with a combination of explosive offense and suffocating defense. The Aztecs' surge to the top of the table reflects a broader transformation within the organization, which has capitalized on recent structural changes in the British game to build a genuine dynasty.[2]

For over a decade, the BAFA Premiership South was defined by the heavyweight clashes between the Aztecs and the London Warriors. However, after the Aztecs defeated the Warriors 27–24 to capture BritBowl XXXVII in September 2025, the London franchise announced its exit from domestic competition to join the newly formed American Football League Europe (AFLE) for the 2026 season. With the Warriors competing on the continent, the Aztecs have stepped into the vacuum, elevating their program to a level the rest of the domestic league is struggling to match.

The club's on-field success is mirrored by significant off-field investments. In late 2025, the Aztecs transitioned to a limited liability company, backed by a new ownership group intent on commercializing the brand and professionalizing the team's operations. Ahead of the 2026 kickoff, the franchise unveiled a comprehensive rebrand, swapping their traditional navy for a striking royal blue and orange color scheme. The visual overhaul signaled a new era for the team, which operates out of Shaftesbury Park in Filton and has heavily invested in its youth and junior development pathways.[2]

That investment has translated into ruthless execution on the gridiron. The Aztecs opened their 2026 title defense with a decisive 28–0 shutout victory over the London Blitz, setting the tone for the summer. They followed that performance with a historic 83–0 demolition of the Rushmoor Knights on the road, a game that saw the Bristol offense score on nearly every possession. Quarterback Ethan Gretzinger commanded the passing attack with surgical precision, throwing for 296 yards and five touchdowns in the blowout, while the defense secured a shutout and forced multiple turnovers.[1]

When the London Blitz traveled to Shaftesbury Park for the return fixture in late June, they offered the Aztecs their most competitive test of the season. The two sides traded momentum throughout the first half, with the Blitz offense finding early success. However, Bristol's depth and conditioning took over in the fourth quarter, allowing them to pull away for a 48–20 victory. The win effectively secured Bristol's grip on the number one seed in the Premiership South standings, leaving the Blitz and the Cambridgeshire Cats to battle for the remaining playoff positioning.[2]

The Aztecs' ground game has been the engine of their offensive dominance, spearheaded by running back Josh Breece. During the 48–20 victory over the Blitz, Breece delivered a statement performance, rushing for 220 yards and three touchdowns. His ability to break tackles and accelerate at the second level has forced opposing defenses to stack the box, which in turn has opened up downfield passing lanes for Gretzinger and the receiving corps.
