Turkiye vs United States · World Cup 2026 Group D

The FIFA World Cup 2026 delivered instant drama as Turkiye edged out the United States 3–2 in an exhilarating five-goal thriller. The USA enjoyed a dream start, opening the scoring in just the third minute through Auston Trusty. However, the Turkish response was swift and decisive; teenage sensation Arda Güler restored parity in the 10th minute, setting the tone for a wide-open contest. Turkiye capitalised on their momentum when Barış Alper Yılmaz found the back of the net in the 31st minute, leaving the Stars and Stripes chasing the game at halftime.

The United States emerged from the break with renewed vigor, equalizing in the 49th minute via Sebastian Berhalter, who redeemed himself after picking up a yellow card in the first half. The USMNT subsequently dominated large stretches of the match, controlling 52% of possession and launching a staggering 18 shots compared to Turkiye's 9. Despite a flurry of offensive substitutions—including the introductions of Timothy Weah and Giovanni Reyna—the American side lacked the cutting edge to break the deadlock, repeatedly frustrated by Turkiye's defensive block.

In football, efficiency often trumps volume, and Turkiye proved that in spectacular fashion. Having registered just three shots on target all game, they made every single one count. In the 90th minute, Kaan Ayhan broke American hearts by converting a dramatic late winner to seal a 3–2 victory. While Turkiye celebrates a masterclass in clinical finishing and resilience, the United States will rue a mountain of missed opportunities, leaving their World Cup campaign facing an uphill battle.
