Germany vs Cote d'Ivoire · World Cup 2026 Group E

Germany booked their place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stages with a dramatic, come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Cote d'Ivoire in Toronto. Julian Nagelsmann's side struggled early on to break through a resilient African defense, and they paid the price in the 30th minute. Cote d'Ivoire captain Franck Kessié pounced in the box to fire the Elephants ahead, capping off an energetic opening half-hour where the reigning African champions matched their European counterparts physically and tactically.

Facing an uphill battle, Nagelsmann turned to his bench, introducing Nico Schlotterbeck at halftime and unleashing a decisive triple substitution on the hour mark. The introduction of Jamal Musiala, Aleksandar Pavlović, and Leroy Sané completely altered the complexion of the match, bringing much-needed pace, directness, and control to Germany's possession. The tactical shift bore fruit in the 68th minute when Deniz Undav grabbed the equalizer, breathing life back into the German side.

As both managers tinkered with their setups in the final quarter of the match—with the Elephants introducing Amad Diallo, Ibrahim Sangaré, and Ange-Yoan Bonny, and Germany swapping out Kai Havertz—the stage was set for a grandstand finish. It arrived in the 90th minute, courtesy of Undav once more. The clinical forward popped up to grab his second of the game, sealing a massive three points and leaving the Ivorians heartbroken. The victory secures Germany's progression to the Round of 32, while Cote d'Ivoire must dust themselves off ahead of a crucial final group fixture.
