Netherlands vs Japan · World Cup 2026 Group F

A breathless second-half display saw the Netherlands and Japan share the spoils in an entertaining 2-2 draw at the FIFA World Cup 2026. After a tense first half where both sides prioritized defensive stability, the match erupted into life after the interval. Ultimately, it was Japan's relentless fighting spirit that defined the encounter, frustrating an Oranje side that twice believed they had secured all three points.

Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk broke the deadlock in the 51st minute, rising to the occasion to put his side ahead. However, Japan responded almost immediately, with Keito Nakamura finding the back of the net in the 57th minute to level the scoreline. The match then turned into a roller coaster for Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville, who received a yellow card in the 61st minute before dramatically restoring the Netherlands' lead just three minutes later with a clinical strike.

With a 2-1 lead, the Dutch sought to close out the game, executing a triple substitution in the 70th minute that involved Summerville, Donyell Malen, and Tijjani Reijnders. Japan countered with their own bench depth, introducing the likes of Daizen Maeda, Takefusa Kubo, and Ritsu Dōan to inject energy into their attack. This persistent pressure paid dividends in the 89th minute when Daichi Kamada struck a dramatic equalizer, sending the Japanese fans into raptures.

For the Netherlands, a late yellow card for Micky van de Ven capped off a frustrating final chapter to a match they will feel they should have put to bed. While the Dutch will lament their defensive lapses in the dying moments, Japan will celebrate a vital point earned through sheer persistence. Both nations remain highly competitive in their group, but Japan departs with all the momentum after this spirited comeback.
