Qatar vs Switzerland · World Cup 2026 Group B

Qatar produced one of the most stunning moments of the 2026 FIFA World Cup's opening week, fighting back in dramatic fashion to snatch a 1-1 draw against a heavily favored Switzerland side. Underdogs on paper, the Asian champions fell behind early and spent much of the match absorbing wave after wave of Swiss pressure. However, their sheer resilience kept them in the contest, setting the stage for a grandstand finish that sent their fans into absolute raptures in the dying moments of the match.

The match exploded into life in the 17th minute when Breel Embolo clinically put Switzerland ahead, immediately after Qatar goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada was booked. With a 1-0 lead, the Swiss controlled the tempo, marshaled by Denis Zakaria in midfield, though Zakaria’s late first-half yellow card signaled a rising physical battle. Qatar struggled to transition into attack early on, while defender Jassem Gaber also went into the referee's book. Tactical adjustments from both benches past the hour mark injected fresh legs, with Swiss wingers Dan Ndoye and Michel Aebischer entering the fray, but the decisive second goal continued to elude the Europeans.

As the clock ticked toward full time, Switzerland opted to lock things down, subbing off Remo Freuler and Ricardo Rodriguez in the 89th minute to preserve their narrow advantage. But their complacency proved fatal. In the 90th minute, Qatar’s veteran captain Boualem Khoukhi rose to the occasion, finding the back of the net to trigger wild celebrations. The draw represents a historic milestone for Qatar, securing their first-ever point at a FIFA World Cup finals. For Switzerland, it is a bitter pill to swallow, leaving them to rue missed opportunities as they let two crucial points slip away at the very death.
