Match report

Telstar Goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr. Makes Eredivisie History With Two-Penalty Brace

The 31-year-old shot-stopper converted two penalties, including a 101st-minute equalizer, to rescue a 10-man Telstar in a dramatic 2-2 draw against Cambuur.

Telstar goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr. scored two penalty kicks, including a 101st-minute equalizer, to rescue a 2-2 draw against Cambuur in the Dutch Eredivisie on Sunday.[3]

The 31-year-old shot-stopper became the first goalkeeper in the history of the Dutch top flight to score twice in a single match. The performance salvaged a vital point for Telstar, who played with 10 men for nearly 80 minutes after Icelandic striker Nökkvi Thórisson was shown a straight red card in the 22nd minute.[1]

Trailing 2-0 in the second half at the BUKO Stadium in Velsen-Zuid, the home side looked destined for a lopsided defeat. But in the 63rd minute, Telstar earned a penalty, and Koeman Jr. stepped up to the spot, driving the ball into the lower-right corner to cut the deficit in half.[2][6]

The real drama arrived deep into stoppage time. In the 11th minute of added time, a VAR review confirmed a handball inside the box by Cambuur's Mathieu Maertens, upgrading an initial free-kick to a penalty.[1][3]

Timeline of Telstar's dramatic 2-2 draw against Cambuur.

Opposing players attempted to ice the goalkeeper before the decisive kick, but Koeman Jr. remained unfazed. "You know how it goes. They start talking to you - the goalkeeper and the striker," Koeman Jr. told ESPN after the match. "But you can't rattle me, mate. You just take a moment for yourself and focus."[1]

He smashed the ball into the exact same corner, sealing the 2-2 draw and sending the home crowd into a frenzy. "I'm top of the list, you've seen that," he noted. "I can just take a good penalty and I'm confident, so there's no doubt."[1]

The sight of a goalkeeper taking penalties is a tactical anomaly in modern soccer, as it leaves the net completely exposed to a counterattack if the shot is saved. However, Telstar manager Anthony Correia entrusted Koeman Jr. with the responsibility after the team missed two consecutive penalties during the first half of the previous season.[2]

That decision paid historic dividends in May 2026, when Koeman Jr. scored an 89th-minute penalty against FC Volendam on the final matchday of the 2025-26 season. That 2-1 victory kept Telstar out of the relegation playoff zone and preserved their Eredivisie status—a division they had only just returned to in 2025 after a 47-year absence.[2][5]

A 101st-minute VAR review awarded Telstar the decisive penalty.

The set-piece prowess is a well-documented family trait. Koeman Jr. is the son of Dutch legend Ronald Koeman, who recently managed the Netherlands national team at the 2026 World Cup before being succeeded by Xavi Hernandez. During his playing days, Koeman Sr. was renowned for his lethal free-kicks and penalties, famously scoring 26 goals in 46 games for PSV Eindhoven during their 1987-88 treble-winning season.[3][6]

While the younger Koeman spent the early years of his career struggling for minutes at Almere City and TOP Oss, he has found a permanent home at Telstar since joining in 2021. He signed a contract extension in July 2026 that keeps him at the club until 2028.[5]

Koeman Jr. is the first goalkeeper in Eredivisie history to score twice in a single match.

The draw leaves both clubs searching for stability early in the 2026-27 campaign. Cambuur, having conceded 16 goals in their first four matches, will view the blown two-goal lead as a missed opportunity to secure three crucial points on the road.[7]

For Telstar, the dramatic comeback feels like a victory. "It's great to take responsibility, but the lads put in the hard work today," Koeman Jr. reflected. "It was the same corner, yeah. Maybe I should change it up sometime. But if it's hit with power, they can't save it."[1]

  • Neutral Analysts · 30%Fascinated by the tactical risk of using a goalkeeper for penalties, noting that it pays off only because of Koeman Jr.'s exceptional striking technique.
