The Canadian Football League season is entering its critical late-summer stretch, and the playoff picture is rapidly crystallizing. At the top of the mountain, the Montreal Alouettes have established themselves as the undisputed team to beat, setting a blistering pace for the rest of the league.[1][2]
Boasting a league-best 9-1-0 record, Montreal is riding a dominant seven-game winning streak. Their success is built on a balanced and relentless attack, featuring the CFL's second-highest scoring offense at 36.7 points per game and a stingy defense allowing just 26.3 points per contest.[2]
The Alouettes are on the verge of making history for the 2026 campaign. A victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Week 13, coupled with some help from around the league, could see Montreal become the first team to officially clinch a postseason berth and potentially secure a home playoff date.[2]
Quarterback Davis Alexander has been a revelation for Montreal, improving to an incredible 20-1 in his career as a starter following a recent 46-16 romp over the Ottawa Redblacks. With defensive stars like Kabion Ento stepping up to score pick-sixes, the Alouettes are firing on all cylinders.[1][3]
While Montreal controls the East Division, the West Division is turning into a heavyweight brawl. The BC Lions have emerged as the hottest team out West, stringing together four consecutive victories to rapidly climb the standings and power rankings.[1][6]
BC's recent 30-16 triumph over the reigning Grey Cup champion Saskatchewan Roughriders showcased a defense that is peaking at exactly the right time. Quarterback Nathan Rourke has found his rhythm, utilizing the dual-threat backfield of Zander Horvath and James Butler to keep opposing defenses completely off balance.[6]
Not to be outdone, the Edmonton Elks are proving to be a highly resilient force. Sitting comfortably at 8-3, the Elks recently pulled off a dramatic second-half comeback against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers that sent shockwaves through the division.[1][5]
Trailing 16-6 at halftime, Edmonton completely dominated the final 30 minutes of play. The rally was capped off by kicker Vincent Blanchard, who nailed his second walk-off, game-winning field goal of the season to secure a thrilling 22-19 victory for the Green and Gold.[1][4]
For teams like the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Calgary Stampeders, the margin for error is shrinking by the week. Winnipeg sits at 5-5-0, struggling to maintain consistency despite strong individual performances, such as running back Brady Oliveira eclipsing the 100-yard mark for the third time in four games.[1][4]
Calburn, meanwhile, finds itself at the bottom of the West Division but remains just two points behind both Winnipeg and BC. The Stampeders are dealing with injuries to key offensive stars Vernon Adams Jr. and Dedrick Mills, making their upcoming stretch of games crucial for their survival.[6]
The CFL's crossover rule adds another layer of intrigue to the standings. If the fourth-place team in one division finishes with more points than the third-place team in the other, they can cross over and steal a playoff spot, meaning every single point matters down the stretch.[2]
