In a foundational 1975 experiment, researchers Shelley Taylor and Susan Fiske demonstrated that when observers watch a 2-person conversation, they attribute greater influence to the individual whose face is most visible to them. The person performing the action is the most visually prominent element in the environment. The surrounding situational factors—economic pressures, social norms, or institutional rules—are often invisible. This initial observation triggers the first phase of the 2-stage model of attribution, formalized in 1995 by Daniel Gilbert. In this first stage, the brain makes an automatic, unintentional characterization of the actor's disposition based on the observed behavior. This mechanical understanding strips away the hype surrounding the fundamental attribution error. The capability to understand context is fully present in the human brain; it simply ships with a high processing cost. When marketing language or political rhetoric focuses entirely on 1 individual’s actions, it is exploiting perceptual salience to keep the audience in stage 1, preventing the effortful correction that would reveal the broader system at work.[3][6]
Recognizing this mechanism offers a practical way to improve social perception. Because effortful correction is resource-dependent, simply slowing down the judgment process by a few seconds and reducing cognitive load allows the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex the time it needs to fire. We do not need to rewrite human nature to be more empathetic; we just need to give the brain enough bandwidth to finish the calculation.[2][5]
