GeMera Racing Retains 44Cup Championship Lead as Team Charisma Claims Record-Tying Marstrand Victory

Marstrand’s picturesque rocky outcrops and ancient castles provided a stunning backdrop for the third stop of the 2026 44Cup season, delivering three days of fiercely competitive RC44 racing before a windless finale abruptly halted the action. The premature end to the regatta cemented the standings, handing the event victory to Nico Poons’ Team Charisma while allowing the local favorites, GeMera Racing, to maintain their grip on the overall season championship.[1]

For the Dutch-flagged Team Charisma, the victory in southern Sweden represents a historic milestone. By securing the top spot on the podium, Poons and his crew claimed their fifth Marstrand title—adding to their triumphs in 2018, 2022, 2023, and 2024. The win officially ties them with Chris Bake’s Team Aqua for the most victories at the iconic Scandinavian venue.[1]

"It's a good thing that I'm now equal with Team Aqua. It is just a shame that Chris isn't here to celebrate with me," Poons remarked after the final races were abandoned. Reunited with New Zealand tactician Hamish Pepper, who guided the team to World Championship titles in 2022 and 2023, Team Charisma navigated the notoriously tight fleet by minimizing unforced errors. France's Aleph Racing, who completed the Marstrand podium in third place after an impressive fightback from two last-place finishes, holds second overall with nine points. GeMera Racing’s success on home waters was hard-earned. Helmed by Markus Törnqvist and guided by veteran Italian tactician Francesco Bruni, the team overcame early tactical missteps and a damaged kite to consistently post top-tier finishes. "We made our mistakes at the beginning of the week and managed to learn from them," Törnqvist noted, expressing his relief at defending their season lead in front of a passionate local crowd.[1][2]

Torbjörn Törnqvist’s Artemis Racing, featuring SailGP helmsman Phil Robertson as tactician, provided the highlight of Saturday’s racing. Artemis executed a flawless strategy to win the day's final race, which featured a spectacular "Foxtrot finish" that brought the high-performance yachts sprinting directly into Marstrand Harbour, passing the historic Carlsten Fortress under full sail.

The early stages of the regatta belonged to Christian Zuerrer’s Black Star Sailing Team. Thriving in the idyllic 10-12 knot northwesterly breezes that graced the opening days, the Swiss crew demonstrated remarkable synergy to score back-to-back bullets. However, the notoriously unforgiving nature of RC44 racing eventually caught up with them; Black Star missed the overall event podium by a single point, finishing tied with defending Marstrand champion Team Nika.[1][2]

The razor-thin margins of the one-design class frequently resulted in chaotic mark roundings. On the third day, a combination of tidal relief, localized wind shifts, and a knot of adverse current created a massive logjam at the top mark. Multiple boats, including Team Aqua and Wow! Sailing Team, became entangled in penalty-inducing maneuvers as crews desperately attempted to shoot the mark or bail out of impossible lay lines.

Ultimately, the intense tactical dogfights were silenced by the weather. On Sunday, an isobar-free weather pattern settled over southern Sweden, leaving the waters off Marstrand completely glassy. Principal Race Officer Maria Torrijo and the race committee monitored the overcast skies until 14:00, hoping for a sea breeze that never materialized, before officially abandoning the final three races.[1][3]

With the Scandinavian chapter of the 2026 season concluded, the nine-boat fleet now faces a brief hiatus before the stakes are raised even higher.
